Forgive me if this has been posted before, but this is something I discovered on the weekend.

Like a lot of people I miss the throne room where I could see who owns what. However, I found a replacement in my Emissaries. Grab one of these suckers and drag him over to the province you want to know the owner of. Wait for the tool tip to appear and it will tell you who owns the province.

The inherent ignorance of the political geography is somewhat strange. In these times you did not have to station people in each province to monitor who ruled the province. News spread through travellers, merchants etc. Anyone with an acumen of 2 should be able to paint the map based on such information.

Even if you chose to send your people abroad to gather the most basic non-classified information, on things like who's in charge here, then they typically wouldn't be killed instantly as they set foot outside their homeland. The rampage of the assassins is quite extreme.

you can also post ships in the coastal waters which give you some info on who occupies territories and if there are any armies in them. since 99% of the strat map is near water, you'll only miss the really far interior lands in upper asia inner germany. this is a good way without using any codes.
