I have been excommunicated for attacking fellow catholics. I was wondering if the excommunication bug was fixed in the patch. I see nothign about it in the details for the patch and am wondering if I still have to worry about crusades even though I am no longer excommunicated, which was a problem before the patch.

Also, I am playing as the italians and was excommunicated for attacking the sicilians, the spanish launched two crusades against me, first one failed and the second one would always enter my province, then retreat to an HRE province (HRE also excommunicated), this went on for 5-6 turns, no battle ever ensued. Then the last time they entered my province, they retreated and poof they were gone from the map and I was no longer excommunicated and either were the HRE. Anyone know what happened?

When the Pope dies, all excommunications are nullified. Maybe thats what happened

No notice that the pope died and the pope still has the same name and rating. I tried to assassinate the pope but he got away and got a bonus for getting away from my four assassins and that was still there, so I dont think that the pope died unless he was reincarnated somehow.

that is an interesting situation the answer to which I do not know, the way it played out it would be logical if the Pope indeed died making all excommunictions nullified, but if you say the pope is alive and well tha's perplexing. I know what I hate about how the excommunication process works ,it seems a bit unbalanced to me I have played as the English and have been attacked by the French they sunk my ship in the channel ,twice and I did not retaliate, then they attacked me in Aquataine and that was enough I struck back at their ships once and I was threatened by the Pope . And then retook Aquataine and I was excommunicated seems a bit unfair but I just build up and go in and stomp the pope http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I think there are some crusade "bugs" that have not been fixed by the patch. I was playing as the Byzantines and every catholic faction launced crusades against me (including the Pope). I beat the English crusade and followed up by invading the province it invaded from and finally destroyed it. The English then launced another crusade at me, but as it was marching towards me the English King died and next turn the crusade disappeared. (Unless the new King cancelled it, which the player couldn't do - you can't cancel crusades while in mid march - it should still have been there on the map somewhere). Suddenly I was at peace with the English. I guess its just a bug. AI factions also sometimes have more than 1 crusade at the same time. This also was a "bug" - at least if the AI is limited to the same rules as the player.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

I can't explain it either, but never look a gift horse in the mouth. Maybe after surviving your assassination attempts, he experienced an epiphany and saw the light of reason. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif Maybe he woke up with a horse's head in his bed. It's possible that cugels disappearing crusade was caused by the crusades host province changing hands. He said the king died was there a civil war possibly. If so maybe the rebels took control over the province the crusade started in thus destroying the crusade.

Crusade may disappear if suddenly someone refuse entry to them and they had to fight. When crusade lost a battle, usually there is no place to retreat to. They disappear like any other defeated-without-retreat army.

Who said the Pope didn't favor Byzantine? My current Italian campaign, I am trying to use the Crusade to take out my second rival in the Med (after doing away with Sicily and suffer a few years of excomm). Was trying to drop the Crusade on Constantinople, but the Pope said "ah-uh, Byzantines are valuable allies to the cause of the Church..."

Dijeeh, the Pope will excommunicate the larger faction.

If the faction that attacks you are only 50% of you, then you will get the warning... The Pope doesn't care who attacked who, he only cares that all survives.

So defend yourself, take a province and make sure you take the castle as you can't wait it out (or you will get Excommed).

Odyssey,

I have found that sometimes excommunications are lifted again, usually if you don't make aggressive moves for maybe 10 years or so. I didn't check how many years or whether it differs depending ont he transgression that caused the excommunication. But it happened more than once in my
campaigns and it makes sense too.
As for the crusade disappearing, it could either be as Lady Ann described, or it could be just that the crusade lost all its men, you said they stayed idle for 5 to 6 years after they were beaten back in their first attack on you. So that crusade continually loses men each turn, whether fighting or not.

Hmmm........I've noticed that excommunications stay in effect even after my king dies and I have the patch and I have re-installed the game. I wonder why I am getting this bug?
