AHHH Damn French, they attacked me on 3 fronts, so I hit them back took all their land but 1 little area and in 2 years I was excamunicated (spl) ah this stinks and the Pope is only 40 grrr now I have to worry about crusades.

Am more worry about disloyalty than crusade coming from other factions. It did happen to me once (got crusade declared on me and crusades actually happened). But otherwise, it is a bit harmless.

If your own king dies, the excommunication is lifted...

I've waited until I had an old king before hitting at several catholic factions at once. Of course, that king ended up living into his mid 80's...so I had to deal with excommunication for a looooonnnnnnnngggggg time. Whenever I want a king to die he lives into his 80's. If I want him to stick around he dies in his early 60's.

I've noticed for a long time that the Pope seems to favour the French more than most Catholic factions, save perhaps Spain. I believe this is because they seem to mount the most crusades possibly gaining favour with the holy father.

I've even had the Pope attack me as the Italians. It wasn't until I counter-attacked that he excommunicated me. I think the key here is to fight defensively only. Excommunication is nasty. It seems to lower provincal support and loyalty. Be a good catholic, and take yer cleansing.
