I am currently playing the English. I have Wales & have upgraded it's Bowyer to Workshop. In fact I have several Bowyer's Workshops throughout my empire. I cannot train crossbowmen in any of these provinces, however; they simply aren't on the parchment for choosing which unit type to train. Longbowmen don't appear on the sheet that came with the game, so maybe I'm forgetting that it needs to be a Bowyer's Guild.
Anyway, did the patch cause some units to not appear before a certain year (it's currently 1170)? Or am I experiencing a bug? (I have XP.)

The v1.1 patch fixed a bug in the original game which made units available (when you had built the appropriate buildings) at any time. Now you only get units during the periods (Early, High, Late) to which they are tied. Longbowmen and Billmen, for example, are only available in High and Late. So you have to wait until 1203 for longbowmen.
This annoyed me to begin with but it helps the AI, so makes the game tougher for the human, which is good. The AI factions aren't great at (a) teching up to the higher buildings and (b) holding on to provinces without invasions which destroy buildings, so they were at a big disadvantage.
Longbowmen are high units, you won't have longbowmen in your army until year 1025.
The same for crossbowmen.

Does anybody know of a site which states exactly which units are early, high or late?

Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware it was a bug in the release; I thought I was just doing well. The patch fixed that illusion.
But at least this means I can take it easier on development & save some money. I'm constantly broke, but I have castles in several provinces already
In the table of contents is a list of all units and the ERA they are avail. Also there is the SEARCH feature. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Search before you post is a good rule to follow http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
