Anyone have any ideas about what new units or buildings will be added in VI?
Im particularly interested in additions to the English. I have two schools of thought on this:
1. CA is English, so they would have put all that they could
into the English faction from the start, so nothing new
will be added.
2. CA is English, so they will want to add as much as they
can to the English faction http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Any ideas?
Rex
I'm pretty certain that there will be a couple new units for the English. Nothing extraordinary, but perhaps some of the less common weapons and warriors of the time.
English weapons. (http://www.angelcynn.org.uk/)
This site contains a pretty healthy amount of information that could be applicable.

The story so far:
The English stuff is all handled in the Viking era, where the game only focuses on small, minor factions in the Isles and Scandinavia.
The Russians get Druzhina Cavalry, and a new "armored spearman unit", as said by Cap'n Fishpants.
The new factions Hungary, Aragon, and Sicily will appear, with Jobbagy Infantry as a definite new unit for Hungary. I have a hunch that Aragon might find a way to get cheap Almughavars, and that Sicily will get a special crossbowman unit(in the unit descriptions under Pavise Crossbows you can read "the Italians are famous for their Crossbowmen")
Muslim factions are getting pumped up with new Faris Cavalry, which should give them some heavy power.
The French and maybe others will get access to the Organ Gun, a late-period, multi-barreled, anti-personnel cannon.
Hungarians also get a cav unit szekly or something
i read somewhere there was quite a few new units for the origianl campagin

There are some 40-odd new units in Viking Invasion, in both the original parts of the game and the new campaign.
Some are limited to just appearing in the Viking Campaign that is played on the map of the British Isles. These are the ones that are specific to the new factions in that campaign, such as the Picts, Irish, Saxons and so on.
There are others, such as the Jobbagy and Szekely who are limited to the new factions for the original game, in these two cases, the Hungarians.
There are some new units that are added to the army lists of existing factions: the Armoured Spearmen unit falls into this category, as these will be available to the Polish, Russian, Hungarian, Novgorod and Swiss factions. The Byzantine Lancers are, obviously, a specific unit for the Byzantines.
You'll also find that there are "new" units that turn up in (mostly) Early period rebel armies too. And if you can provoke a rebellion in the right place, have the cash to hand and have your bribe accepted, maybe you can hire the Sherwood Foresters - and find out exactly what they do that's special http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

So, no info on any new English units. Oh, well, we already have Longbows and Billmen, that's more than some... the Sherwood Foresters comment is interesting though.
What's the expected release date? Sorry for the questions, but I've been away from the boards for a while. I've been trying to destroy the Egyptians and Turks before the Almohads come back

Women and children Cost 20 fl, but each individual loss lowers the loyality of the province where the unit was prodused by 1.

Ok, they may be cheap at first but Women and Children are the most expensive units in terms of their yearly upkeep. Even one of each can bankrupt your treasury within a few years, and if you ever find yourself with two or more Women units you're in real trouble.

I'm obviously feeling "hinty" this week - as in an overwhelming need to drop hints...
There are two "Scottish" factions in the new add-on, Scots and Picts. The Scots themselves are invaders from Ireland and late-comers to Scotland.
In the Viking Campaign the Scots will have exclusive use of Highlanders (naturally), along with new Royal Bodyguards, Nobles (cavalry), new Horsemen and Armoured Spearmen.
The Picts get access to Pictish Cavalry, Pictish Crossbows, Pictish Warriors (infantry) and their own Berserkers (who are definite headbangers).
You should find integrating these into an army that can beat off the Saxons, Mercians, Northumbrians and the Vikings an interesting tactical challenge http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Does anyone besides me think that the new Viking Period is shooting for a more balanced, simpler, STW-esque game?

its the sequel to stw f00and btw battles with half naked men is awesome, shows you how truly fierce and not death fearing they used to be.

This and STW are my fav times in fighting and war. I love war with no guns and stuff, all hand to hand, imiagine how many men killed their own teamates? Like William Wallace I love that movie Bravehart

I like what I'm hearing The Picts and Scots are appearing to be a definite foce to be reconned with.
I like that the Hungarians are getting 2 unique units and the new armoured spearmen unit.
I hope I'm not being a nuisance Cap'n Fishpants, but I have a relatively small question:
Will the actual Viking unit look the same as the one in the original MTW? (the one that looks like a peasant with an axe and shield)
I agree Minikiller, somtimes I refer to the Dark Ages as the "real" Middle Ages because they weren't corrupted by a whole lot of ranged attack and was exceptionally brutal.

I agree with Emp.Conralius the dark ages is the true middle ages, most battles were fought with sword and bow,not guns http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif and bows were not common in these ages too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
40 new units sound good, but how many of these are there for the original game?
if you look closely at the in game pic you can see vikings,
yes the plain old vikings

Byzantine lancers should be (historically) a fairly mediocre type of medium-heavy cavalry - a bit heavier than current Mtd Sergeants perhaps?
Just guessing here, but they weren't highly regarded after Manzikert, and before then Byzantine cavalry always fougt in mixed units of lancers and archers appart from small detachments fro scouting and flank guards (or unless they were dual armed with lance AND bow as many elite units were).
Pictish berserkers could be interesting - there was a tribe or type called "Attecoti" or something similar, but off hand I have a feelign they were some of the pre-pictish inhabitants of hte north - the Caledones defeated by the Romans at Mons Severus.
hmm.. it is sounding really really good. if its anything to go by, i think MTW will be my game of the year... meaning the one i played 90% of the time

I have this strange nagging in the back of my mind that the berserkers of VI will be 1-man morale-destroying units.

Are now thats what I call a hint, you can't give people crossbows in the dark ages and keep up the eidiculousness that they couldn't b got in early medieval http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif . So I take it you can get crossbows in medieval, or mayebe only french can get them in early http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . I love speculating.
