I tell them to do lotsa things charge inf/calv/archers there just sutch a allround okay unit no real tactics just make them hold up the enemy's inf while more specialised units flank.

My advice is don't buy them. Use Feudal MAA as they're cheaper and nearly as good, with just a slightly lower attack than Chiv MAA.

Also post-patch I believe they recieve their proper morale bonus for having a sword workshop (is that the name, level 2 swordmaker anyway) so they work out as having much more bang-per-florin than Chiv MAA.

In general though...don't use them to attack polearm equipped troops...the results are less than flattering. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

The levels don't count for anything unless hey are Masters. So CMAA are actually worth it now.

Use them as the staple infantry. If you fear large enemy formations bring more spears, if not then bring plenty of them.

Make sure they hit from the sides or rear with a charge, but don't recharge as it is not good enough for that.
Don't fear a streight melee head on with a spear, just make sure you have the time to defeat them (you will but after a good time).

Yeah, I like the CMAA. They are a very good staple unit and hold the line well in combination with spear units.

Kraxis, what does "staple" mean,I know English but never heard this word http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
I noticed they get beaten by armor pierceing units, did u see that?

You know 'staple' foods? They are the basic foods, the ones you base your diet on. The same here... you base the army around these guys.

Avoid AP units with MAA, the AP units get +1 attack against them, often the CMAA can defeat them anyway, but it can be costly.
Also heavy cav are their bane, they can't handle the heavy charge too well. They will though take a good piece of the cav.

Point is that you can almost take on any unit with them and make them lose more than you florinwise.

Yeah,to bad they have such a low charge, guess must be due to those swords, but clansmen and gallows have swords too(but different kinds of swords i think)

I barely use MAA @ all.

They are very vulnerable to Heavy Cavalry. The AI always trys to hit them with Cavalry.
It takes them ages to do decent damage to Spear units, making them vulnerable to flanking.
They are Infantery ... meaning slow, easíly exhausted due to movement.
Its just 60 of them.

I may be wrong but I think MAA are the quickest way to kill spearmen (except cav charge in the back). Also, they can hold out against cav for a while. I usually send them in after the spear lines have engaged. Their advantage is they don`t need much micro management after that.

Well, generally infantry do better than cavalry that are at a comparable tech level in terms of attack and defense...They should be able to beat up relatively heavy cavalry if they are not charged first. The advantage of cavalry is obviously their charge, so if these guys hit a marching cavalry unit, they could do some major damage, or at least tie them up for a long while.

heh, i tend not to field them in SP, i prefer larger units of spears and heavy cav. My spears fave thier spears and hold them while my cave are there to flank and cause panic

I've had a bit of a soft spot for cmaa since I got them in my first english campaign but seriously never go without them if I have a choice. As far as my experience goes their only weakness is to a charge from heavy cav so have to work to avoid that.

But they do well against the much feared AUM and if they can catch a unit in the flank they will punish it. I have actually seen a unit of cmaa (valour 6 I think) wipe out a 40 man unit of feudal knights (valour 2) before they even had a chance to rout. I zoomed in close to watch and the cav just fell over (was on hard mode).

So I always try to flank with these guys and try to keep a reserve troop near centre as they have good morale and seem to keep fighting well even when exhausted. I let my cheaper spears do the dirty fighting in the centre while these guys grab the glory.

Agree with Kraxis definitely a staple unit.

I used to use them, but now I just add church, monestary and reliquary to a province and build halberdiers with high honor, morale and good armor. They are better all round troops then than any CMAA, plus cheaper. Halberdier's only limitation is their poor starting morale, but if you build them with good morale, they're great I learned this the hard way when my CMAA were decimated by high honor/morale militia sergeants (same thing happens whenever CMAA go up against armor piercing bonus troops -- put them up against Varangians if you want to see them wilt fast) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
