put assasins in each providence , it helps a lot.

Build border guard too.

For me, I find that assasins are better at catching enemy assasins. May be it's because I can train them before I can get spies.

Have some assasins and/or spies ready before you move in a newly capture province. Most likely that the enemy still have some assasins left in the province. Move them in right after you capture the province (it turns into your color).

Another intolerable unit is the inquisitor. I'm playing the Byzantines and there's this 4-star inquisitor who's terrorized Palestine for almost a century now. An inquisitor of such high valour is almost impossible to kill with low level assassins. When I was playing a catholic faction I could usually drive them away by sending bishops, but they don't seem to mind the orthodox priests.

Inquisitors aren't stealth units. They conduct trials in public. I should be able to let my regular troops kill them.

Erm.. what gives?

You're playing the Byzantines, Roman Catholic church has no authority over any of your units... they just can burn some of the population in that province, but is that such a big deal for you?

Fed up with Inquisitors, Assassins and the like? Try the NoAgents Mod at:

Org Downloads -> Medieval -> Stats and Mods -> NoAgents1_1

which gets rid of all agents except Princesses and Emissaries. We now return you to your regular program ...

I usually keep at least 2 spies in every province i own, plus a couple of bishops. This plus watchtowers in every province means that enemy assassins rarely last very long.

I'm assuming the inquisitor has some effect on the province, like reducing happiness or loyalty, increasing the number of catholics or something similar. The warnings about things getting out of hand in Palestine are a bit worrying.

Yeah I noticed this last night, playing as the English.. I had an Emmissary in Constantanople keeping an eye on things...

A Papel faction Inquisitor turned up and started buring people at the stake (and it definately was the Byz that held Constantanople at that point..)

Sure looks like a bug to me... unless it isn't of course..;)

Yup, I find it absurd that the Inquisitor can lead trials on every province he wants regardless the master of this province.
I had at some time one Inquisitor that I forgot to move. He started an Inquisition in Egypt, right into the Sultanate http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
Really sounds like a bug.

I wonder if that all is required is for a percentage of the population to be Catholic....

So for example if Egypt has 2% Catholic population, that is whom the Inquisitor can burn...

Although Inquisitors work work particular ffactions, they hold the Authority of Rome over all Catholics...anywhere...

Reglion and Politics... always a dangerous combination....

It would have been fun for more strategic depth, if you could deport or execute the visiable agaents for other factions on your lands causing some kind of negative response from that faction or perhaps all factions (depending on who you executed...)..

If only.......

If you put border forts in each province you will have no assasin problems. Each time they move they have a very good chance of getting caught and killed, and they move every turn. All you will see is about 3 notifications every turn of your guards killing another stupid enemy assasin.

when i go after high valor units, i like to gang up on them, send more than one, the more the merrier sooner or later one will hit.

to get the pope, i send 15 after him , if all level 1 about 80% get caught, but one always succeeds.

Hey whats up Swoosh. Currently I am not in a clan (In fact I get an invaled CD Key and have yet to be online, so I am going to email activision right after my game) But I have been friends with Clan Kenchikuka and they have said I may join them. I've been a potential member since the tail end of STW. Why do you ask? I hope you are friendly with Clan Kenchikuka http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

wow, this is a first. usually people complain about how ineffective assassins are.

Granted, I'm playing on Normal, but I've never had any general, princess, agent, etc. assassinated throughout my three campaigns. I've assissanated numerous bishops, emissaries and the like, but I've never been much of a target. I do have Border forts in every province, though. On the other hand, I have had a fair amount of assassins die when entering an enemy province, so it is entirely possible that a few died at the hands of a "counter-assassin" as it were.

Ya well they are going crazy, every turn I kill like 3 but once in awhile they will just go on a killing spree.

i have never had trouble with assasins, just build border forts and that will stop much of the deaths. as for inquistedors... i try to kill them, but if i cant i just invade the papacy and kill off the pope, then leave a small number of my best units to guard the lands taken. it works just fine most of the time.
