Nice one, Maltz!

Labelling the units on the screenshots is a very good idea - it was sometimes difficult to work out what was going on before.

Thanks. In order to make the text barely readable, I made the .jpg files 80% larger (hope it doesn't matter too much).

Yes Shimazu is indeed harder than most others. I've got the screenshots ready (over 500 in total) - but still trying to decide what new features to feed in. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/confused.gif

Now I just hope I can get Hojo done (including finish the game) before the expansion http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Good Job.

The side-by-side and the labelling really help.

Great Job Maltz!
I wish I could keep up with you! I'm beginning to feel like a Naginata climbing a steep hill during an ice storm.....and no snow shoes.
Did I read you have over 500 screen shots? Once I got used to the side-by-side story/ screenshots I really like it.

Excellent effort! Great stories, campaigns and Tactics!

Great stories! This Hojo campaign should
be my favorite since a story finally feature
my precious Ashigarus http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

My problem is.. I can't seem to implement
Maltz blitzkrieg strategy. With no save/load
on expert TAKEDA and IMAGAWA, I finished the campaign 10 or more years than the war story.

Radan please don't get frustrated.
SP campaign has a large factor of luck!
Like I said, a very poor harvest year usually completely stall us for one year while the enemy prospers a lot - and sometimes enemy ninja just get super lucky. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

btw, I think i'll be able to finish the takeda campaign earlier, and i'm still playing it without repetitive use of save load. of coz i did that before but that bothered me too much.

Maybe i was with luck, becoz i saved
aki with a peasant revolt. and yet defeated usegi in a decisive battle having geographical and numerical disadvantage 2xx to 3xx. And most importantly, the first war declared on musashi, i lost 21 in the battle, with 10 recovered from the daimyo's bodyguard, but didn't gain the swordmenship event though until i attack shimoma right afterwards. Now I have crashed hojo and usegi in 2 years. i'm continuing in the 3rd year. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hmmm.... was i misunderstood?
What I mean is, after each chapter, you may raise some questions like " now should we go west or south?" or like" are we going to take the risk or play safe or half of both?", or even "should we take aki or musashi first?" then the final decision will be depended on the votes we made.

Conquistador
07-12-2001, 14:56
Hmm...it looks like my post was gone...hmm..let me say that again.

hey Maltz, I was enjoying your entire story series, especially impressed by the Imagawa's one. however, for the line i made, i felt you misunderstood my meaning, and also i mispresented it.
What I mean is, you may consider giving the story some interactivity.
Let say there's a decision question after each chapter, like " should we take shinano from the ronins, attack imagawa base first, do both of them or none of them?" or " should we strengthen our defense than take the risk to challenge oda right away",
so we can vote to make the final decision.

radan
07-12-2001, 17:17
Maltz, you're very lucky on your Hojo
campaign since Takeda went Ronin.
In my present hojo campaign, he was very active until the sixth year before I got him.
He is constantly invading Mushasi (probably
he gave up his lands on Mori's area and
concentrated on me.

The peasant revolts on conquered lands
are sometimes annoying if they revolted
against you http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I got one in Etchu, which
was a large revolt with some Warrior monks.
I guess I have to create hoards of shinobis
instead of yari ashigarus.

Conquistador, sorry about the misunderstanding! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Yes your idea is very good, but to tell the truth I am usually impatient enough to play the game about 2 or 3 chapters ahead! So by the time you see chapter 3, I've probably played to chapter 5, and so on http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif But I should be able to hold myself from doing that.

Maybe we can set up a rule of voting - what is the minimum valid vote for a decision, how long is the voting period, etc. However, I am a little afraid I might receive no vote, if the story becomes truly boring. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yes Radan, the central factor about SP no save-load is luck! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I was afraid Miyoshi Tadayoshi might be gone this way, too. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif

Maltz, I'm sure there's a lot of people who check your story almost every day. If it's going to be a voting system, you can make a link to a voting poll website. Talk to the org and they'll create another post, Maltz's Interactive War Story.

If you are still afraid of having voting problem, then set the time limit of a decision to 24 hours, or 36; so it wouldn't cause too much problem for the flow of the story.

Maltz
07-13-2001, 03:23
Yeah what Conquistador suggests sounds pretty feasible and fun. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Now maybe we need to figure out what is to be voted. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
I guess it can go as simple as "What should we do in the coming year":
we can simply hold the vote once per year, just like real samurai clans.
Then everybody creates/supports an opinion on the voting website.

If there are significant changes in the game that requires an emergency "meeting",
then I might just stop the chapter there.

Once a question is out, I will announce it here (in this very thread):
"The vote for 1536 is out, please go check it out and the vote closes at GMT xx:xx July xx"
The default voting time will be 24 hours.

Does Conquistador or anybody has a good suggestion of voting site? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Hopefully we can get some non-anonymous voting sites to avoid flooding of repetitive
joking opinions. (must be the spies from Oda!) http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

I guess we can start it as soon as the voting website is settled.

I will also now make the information on the meeting page even more detailed,
who has how many army at where... etc. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Just 2 points to add:

1. Instead of stuffing 100 lines of details onto a king-size screenshot, I will just upload the save game file (will be a link on the title page). The size is about 1 MB - once you download it and put it in the right place, you can see all the info in STW. Yet as the campaign is no save-load in nature, we hope we can contribute our opinions without simulating the strategy on STW using the save game file.

2. To make the voting simple, every valid opinion should be signed with a forum name, such as:

Vote [ ] [Maltz] I think we just sleep and do nothing this year.
Vote [ ] [Conquistador] I think we should attack Shimazu's Bungo and advance further south if possible.

So you also knows whose opinion you are supporting.

---
Extra stuff on the vote:

The opnion that gets the most vote will be carried out! It is as simple as that http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hmmmm.... voting on the next phase of action... Count me out, cause I'd probably vote for all-out assault on heavily fortified Shinano with Ashi army. Martz's story'd probably end up as Shimazu... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Seriously though, I think that is a cool idea. We would become the advisor to the Lord Hojo. ALthought that probably is historically incorrect, I mean, shoot it was a Dictatorship, not democracy.

I guess the most important point is to have fun - even if our collective decision turns out to be the stupidest of the century - we still enjoy the discussion.

I will of course try my best to carry out the decision even if it is not my own opinion.

We'll use this current Hojo campaign as an experiment, if it goes well then we might start a brand new campaign of this. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Maltz
07-13-2001, 06:23
I justed tried www.freevote.com (http://www.freevote.com) and seems their system is satisfactory.

The only very bad thing is the system needs the approval of the booth holder (that's me) for EVERY new opinion to be added for the vote.

Therefore, I will probably first supply some possible options in the names of generals (such as Miyoshi Tadayoshi's opinions). Thus if we have 4 generals with ranks, we will have mostly 4 default options to go for - then if you have your own brilliant move please submit it as soon as possible. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

We can probably test it about 4 hours later or so. Please stay tuned.

Maltz
07-13-2001, 06:29

I'll just hand out the site password and you can add your new opinion anytime. Hopefully nobody accidently hit "delete the booth"... hehe

Maltz

Chapter 5 is on, and the voting booth is open!

It will open till GMT (.org standard time) Saturday 1:00 AM, which is 7/13 Fri (ops) 8:00 PM for where I am, EST, so we have about 20.5 hours left.

There are easy instructions in the page!

Maltz

I just took a look at the booth, and found some vistor has broken up his opinions into a few paragraphs - now each one has become a voting item!

I was reluctant to delete them but I guess I have to - if you know I am referring to you would you please repeat the process and this time don't hit ENTER until the end of your opinion. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

This also applies to everyone (now I've added this in the instruction page).

Also, sometimes I experience difficulty getting the result page displayed - I guess this is because somebody is modifying the settings (by adding his or her own opinion). I could manage to see the results by getting into the modification page (the 2nd link) then just click the modify bottom without changing anything - that will lead us into the result page. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Maltz
07-13-2001, 12:46
seems the booth has some system errors.. hopefully it can be fixed soon http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif

Conquistador
07-13-2001, 13:56
Maltz, plz don't leave the password out there as there could be people who wants to delete the booth, just for reasons like having fun. Or is there a priority level for password like "totalwar" can only add opinion and "maltzwarstory" can modify the booth?
For this stage, the choices you provide will be enough, and there ain't a lot of possible options anyway.
If you find hard in making such system working, then just leave the customized option off, and then re-implementated it when you have the solution about the security. We are satisified as long as there's not just 1 option and as long as we can vote as soon as possible.
And whoever wants to give opinion, they can say it here.
I still ain't able to get to vote, hmm.... i'll vote for a suicide mission like that in Pearl Harbour, attack oda with only the daimyo..hahaha

Conquistador
07-13-2001, 14:11
oops, I downloaded a StarCraft campaign editor from the link you provided, lol.

Another thing, there is less choices for us when we played the campaign of Shimazu. Yeah, always go east. Though we have to choose via mori or via the ronins.

And the mongol invasion is also going to release soon. So Maltz, why not write a story using the Mongol and let us become the advisor of Genghis Khan.
Since most of us wouldn't be able to know the game well in such a short time, we can discuss and make our moves more correctly there.

And what? there'll be a lot of fun when in our personal campaign, we are eliminated and have to restart, or manage to survive but have no hope to win. We can see how it works on the online campaign that we together vote for the decision.

Yeah I guess this meeting is straightforward. Hopefully we can have some more debatable alternatives soon.

You can verify your vote by going to the modify option - then you'll see the current vote counts (but please don't check the box beside the option to add your vote! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif)

5 [Suwa Shigemasa] I will be grateful if I can lead an assault to the Kofu castle of Kai.

4 [Hojo Ujisuna] We should take Kaga after the ronins on the back are handled. How about give this job to Tadayoshi?

As the objective of this year was quite obvious, we had started all preparation work even when they meeting was half-way through. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif Our report has been pre-written; all we did was just plug in the meeting results.

Chapter 8 is a short one!

But the following year is expected to be tough. I will leave the decision to you now! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Vote Here! (http://www.totalwar.org/maltz/06_Hojo/vote.htm)

NEW! You can now cast MULTPLE VOTES (up limit is 5) as long as an opinion fits what you think. But please still limit your votes to ONE vote per item. You can still create your own opinion for voting, same as before.

Because this time the decision is tough, I will make the meeting 2 days long - till GMT Thursday 1:00 AM. About 47.5 hours left!

why not just cast the votes in here? you can also link the camp map to here very easily so folks could see what's going on. if yer concerned about multiple votes or something, it's very easy to see who votes more than once.

The 1539 Spring meeting is adjourned! The debate was intense and the room was hot - because we got so many noble lords packed in the little throne room this time http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Misyoshi just told me we need to hire some sox washers but that's another issue.

The new multiple voting system certainly give the noble lords more freedom to make their decision, too.

The results:

18 [Miyoshi Tadayoshi] Please give me just 600 men and I will defeat the monks in Kaga (300 only in total)! ---- 28.1%

15 [Maltz] Hey don't forget to CS (counter stirke) if odds are good! ---- 23.4%

14 [Hojo Ujiyasu] Oda is more likely to attack Mikawa. Please give me more men. ----21.8%

12 [Ota Yasusuke] We should completely abandon the Kaga campaign and concentrate on defense this year. ---- 18.7%

5 [Hojo Ujisuna] Concentrate on defending Shinano! ---- 7.8%

Total votes: 64

The proposal of Miyoshi Tadayoshi was approved! He will be leading an army to Kaga, while the defense of Mikawa will be strengthened as much as we could! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Chapter 9 is up! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

The meeting of year 1540 (http://www.totalwar.org/maltz/06_Hojo/vote.htm) has started, too.

This meeting is going to be a long one due to my vacation. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif It will last to GMT July 25, 1:00 AM, which is 6 days from now. Take your time and I've got the save game files uploaded again. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hello everyone:

Long time no see. This is Miyoshi Tadayoshi. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

The long meeting of spring 1540 is adjourned!

13 [Miyoshi Tadayoshi] I would be glad to attack Echizen and Hida after the siege of Kanazawa castle of Kaga is over. (45%)

8 [Hojo Ujiyasu] We need more recruits... better refrain from fighting too much. (28%)

5 [Suwa Shigemasa] Please train more shinobi! I don't want to see any more ninja. (17%)

2 [Ota Yasusuke] Please let me command the campaign of Echizen and Hida! (7%)

1 [Hojo Ujisuna] I can lead an assault into Echizen and Hida. The peasants (means Tadayoshi) are too fragile in front of the monks. (3%)

Total Vote: 29

Wohoo! I am appointed to become the taisho of Hojo's Echizen and Hida campaign! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

However, noble lords, I bring you a sad news. Our clan daimyo has decided to infinitely postpone the next clan meeting after all frustration he suffered in the meetings. Nobody listened to his opinion ever! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif

This does not mean that the war story will stop. I will be still telling you the following story once in a while, while Maltz says he is going to be busy with the cooperative SP campaign... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hope to see you soon!

Great work, Maltz! You really crank them out without us bothering you! (one botherment though: Could you spend a little time on Shimazu? I can't imagine anyone beating Shimazu on Expert (I can't beat it on easy http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/redface.gif ).

Hi Alastair: Ok http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif I will push it to chapter 3 on Sunday. Just want to finish one first then move on another.

Also, the current coop SP campaign is on Shimazu, too. (Always Recruiting! Free sign up has been moved to our new, own forum (http://pub86.ezboard.com/fcoopspcampaignfrm1.showMessage?topicID=3.topic). For the purpose of novelty I was a little reluctant to do Shimazu at this moment. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

(Alastair, aren't you also on our most invited list? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif)

Hi Alastair: You are on the Cooperative SP Campaign's most invited list because you have voted for the clan choice, and the result was identical as your choice! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif
