Either I missed it somewhere, or it was never written, but I'm puzzled as to how my cathedral is making money. Does it have anything to do with zeal? Bishops? Priests? And more importantly, how would I be able to make MORE money with the cathedrals?

Im not 100% sure but supposedly they gather taxes from the poppulace... this could be a set amount, but im guessing that zeal, and the amount of catholic peeps which live in the province might have an effect...

i was thinkng it may be based on zeal, but whatever it is, since i built mine ive noticed no increase

I think you can only build one Cathedral and it adds 52 florins per year (through tithes/religious extortion lol) to that provinces income. Other than the 52 florins and increased moral to any troops built there, you can train cardinals. A mostly useless religious agent.
They are supposed to decrease the effectiveness of Inquisitors, I don't notice any difference. They can convert the population to christianity, but priests already do that.

well since it is a catholic church, if you build one in a province full of muslims then i dont think you will be collecting too many taxes... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Oh, I had assumed that Cardinals also increase the zeal of a province--that's just Inquisitors (or Imams)? I find this unlikely, but the Imam's description states that they "do much to further Islam in their provinces" or something similar to that. This doesn't mean that "higher" religious agents are more effective at converting than ordinary bishops and alims, does it?

hmm... perhaps they increase loyalty as well

on another note, perhaps we can make a mod for the catholic church.... make it more realistic as a power... and money grubbing priests

if you open the crusader_build_prod13.txt using Microsoft excel you will notice that having a cathedral or a grand mosque will give you +100 florins a year.

All very interesting people.

However, I feel differently about cardinals (And Orthodox bishops, and Imams for that matter). I like raising the zeal in my provinces. It makes for good crusades, and a loyal population (most of the time). Plus it just reminds me of the python sketch -- "CARDINAL FANG" I think that was his name...

Cathedrals make money thanks to (nominal) pilgrimmages to the site - medieval religious tourism, if you want it in simple terms. There always has been a large trade in souvenirs associated with shrines, even in the Middle Ages. Religion can pay.

The other effects of Cathedrals are to raise the effectiveness of Inquisitors trained in the same province, and increase the morale of Christian military units trained in the same province.

Overall, a Cathedral is an expensive investment, but can be a very worthwhile one. Just make sure you put in in a good place.

So they don't work in the same way as the Cathedrals in Shogun?
Its a shame really http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
I guess all the rest goes to the Pope instead...

You also forgot to mention that a Cathedral gives you the title "Archbishop" that, when given to a good governour, can raise the income of a specific province too... I'm thinking of Venice, for example, +2 acumen isn't that much, but overall it will generate more than the 52 florins you get from the Cathedral itself...

"Plus it just reminds me of the python sketch -- "CARDINAL FANG"

Me too:

"Cardinal Fang You'll have to say it."
"Say what Lord?"
"(You'll have to say: 'our chief weapons are'")
"Nobody expects the er, um . . .
"(Spanish Inquisition)"
"(Yes, I know that) Spanish Inquisition. In fact, those who do expect us. . ."
"(Our chief weapons are)"
etc. .. . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

You forgot to mention the best attribute of the cathedral: doesn't it give +4 morale boost? (I think it's +4). Put a church, monestary, reliquary and cathedral in a province with a +4 armorer and churn out high morale halbrediers that kick serious ass and take a serious beating before they crack

I think they mostly make money by holding bake sales and the occasional Friday fish fry. And don't forget the yearly bizarre where a new Chevy is raffled off http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
