between message boards and dictatorships

hi guys, im awake and i cant sleep, so im going to talk to you about that all to frequent subject of moderators/dictators. my recent cases of insomnia have prompted me to notice the dramatic rise in moved and closed topics. i believe it has become a daily or bi-daily occurence already, and is not the just action. Since i will get moved if i dont post something about the game or tactics or some useless jargon (can't beat the system...), i have decided to devote a brief section of this to the game itself. I propose that instead of sinister moderators patrolling our helpless message boards, we introduce a democratic system where if we have a certain percent of the readers of a topic say that it is unsuited for a section, that it will be booted. I think this a perfectly reasonable way to satisfy the needs of those who are not happy with the current moderatorial (made up word) system. And about the game. You know, if you buy all yari ashigaru and arquebusiers and pick a rainy day, chances are you'll lose. But if you pick a good and sunny day, you will still probably lose, but at least you'll have a bright sunny in game experience. Furthermore, i believe that constant use of ashigaru prevent hairloss and impotency.

I dont think so. The rules are there for a reason not to piss you off. If you posterd in the correct forum it wouldnt matter. Its there board and they can do what they want with it. We have been under this system for months and no one but you has complained.

The only posts I see being closed around here (the General Discussion Forum) are ones that have nothing to do with the current playable version of Shogun Total War + it is also of note that they are not closed per se, but rather moved to other forum areas at the dojo where the threads are more relevant.

I certainly agree that there is a line between message boards and dictatorships but as far as I'm concerned the mods around here haven't crossed it.

Additionally, as far as I know threads concerning the policies in place at the dojo are permitted in GD.

Hello Folks!

Concerning closings: The last time a thread was closed is back on page 2. The thread is entitled "Clan Meeting." It should've been moved to the Clan Forum. However, a copy of the thread already existed there. So I closed the one that was out of place.

Concerning moving threads: What is the problem with moving threads? All of the threads that get moved are placed into another forum so that they can be discussed in the correct place. The General Discussion Forum is somewhat of a feeder forum for the others. It gives forums that would not get as much traffic some new topics.

Concerning being a dictator: Sinister? Dictator? Have I really acted as such? I've always tried to be as fair as possible with the entire board. Whenever a big decision needs to be made concerning anything, the staff talks about it and comes up with dojo policy and I do my best to enforce that. I've also always tried to be civil and understanding of any problems in the forums. I've been flamed a total of once. Perhaps twice. I would invite forumers who have been here a while (or ones that have been here a short time) to tell me what they think about the way I have acted.

Concerning the dojo as a whole: One of my fellow staff, I believe it was Tera, said that this forum is like a "close-knit family." I believe that. Everyone here tries to work together to that we can have good discussion. I've always tried to work towards that goal.

How serious are you anyway, Won-Ton? I know you're kidding, but your topic deserves a serious answer, since you seem to bring it up a lot.

EDIT: + I admit I missed the "kidding" part when I first read it. Now I'm laughing on the floor.

Our staff has always been fair when moving threads and other moderating options and in about a year no-one has complained and the dojo has always been a family-like atmosphere.

Do you think that your topics were moved to off-topic without reason? The GD forum is here to discuss game-related topics not your smily threads and topics to make fun of others.

When you registered to this forum you accepted its policy and if you don't want to or it doesn't suit you, just pack up and leave or else we will help you to do so.

Is it a dictatorship? i think ont, we arer here purely to ensure that things run smoothly. There are 7 forums here IIRC, and plenty of opportunity for evyone to post on whatever they want to within the limits of taste a decency. So why would you want to post OT in GD when there's a dedicated forum. Yes Shiro and I move stuff, but we invariably say where to, why and post a link to it. What's so wrong with that. as to places that have no mods you just have to look at the .com forum where they had to be introduced because things got out of control.

As it hapopens recently OT has been trash, i check there, where there's muck there's brass afterall, but I'm sifting through alot of shit recently for everything thats worth reading. But that crap is not going to spill over here, and it will get moved, or if necessary closed.

Like Tera said, this is a privately owned website, privately owned forum. The owner and admins have the right to take any course of action they want. Nobody is forced to come here.
Most popular discussion boards on the internet have very strict moderating roles. And that is the only way to keep the forums running without chaos. As far as I'm concerned, the moderators here are doing a fine job.

I'm with you Cat on your comments about OT recently ... spamming is all very well, but surely this can be concentrated on one or two threads (Shiro's thread was a good idea BTW). I would say that I think that this is probably just a phase and with a little bit of creative effort, we can return the place to its usual standard.

As for this thread, of course you guys have to defend yourselves, but we are all aware that these problems are the views of one individual. I've said this enough times, but we really do appreciate all the work that you mods and admins do around here. I think that I am speaking for everyone around here when I say that this site has the perfect balance between 'administration' and free speech.

On a more personal note, I have finally come to fully appreciate why my behaviour when I arrived here was received in the way it was. Tera is right when he says that the .Org is a close knit community, however on the other hand it welcomes new members. The only proviso is that members conduct themselves 'honourably' and with the uttmost respect for others patrons (this is where I initially failed). I know that I'm not exactly a veteran around here, but I would encourage new-comers to show a bit of restraint and get to know the place before they go wild. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Im quite new to this forum, although I've played Shougon along time, I bought it the day it came out....

I would just like to plain and simple give my support to the moderators and admins who I think do a great job. I think that they have every right to move off topic stuff to the off topic forum, even though im a swede with a limited knowledge of the languge even I understand the meaning of off topic...

Personally I have few (if any) problems with Atlus, he's funny at EA-Play, and he's usually funny here.

The icon picture thing is a double edged sword; it's fun and great if people act with maturity and don't spam simply to get higher rank + even if that's what they want to do I really don't mind as long as they keep the spam posts in the Shameless thread.

I'm not sure what Anssi has planned for the rank system, but as far as I am concerned there should be positively no custom ranks at 500 unless the parton makes an effort to engender productive posts. -500 posts of spam won't get the respect of anyone here, and it shouldn't be rewarded.

Out of everyone who has custom ranks at the dojo there is really only one guy who I can say for positive sure earned his 500 every step of the way, and that is Kraellin. So young-bloods take note: if you want the respect of everyone here, have a look at some of his old posts and endeavour to come up through the ranks they way he did.

BTW I am pretty sure that this thread can stay in GD because it concerns .org policy. Is that correct Shiro and Cat?

Anyone who regularly checks the Off Topic forum would have a hard time arguing that the mods are anything but lenient and fair. We don't arbitrarily close topics we personally find offensive, though of course we're as free as any other poster to voice our opinions (as fellow posters).

Also, try not to confuse a moderator simply stating an opinion with "laying down law" in some draconian fashion.
