In terms of troops, my biggest was a bridge defense last night. I'm sure others have had bigger battles, but as English, I had 1400+ against the Spanish/Almohad alliance with 2800+. After their initial attempt at the bridge during which the Spanish general was killed, they spent about half the remaining time feinting toward the bridge with jinets & then withdrew. Sorry it wasn't more exciting.
Final casualties: his--411, mine--36. It helps to have a nine-star general: Lord Plantagenet, Duke of Aragon & Warden of the Cinque Ports
Spanish.. Almohads.. Allies? WHAT? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
Mine was 5.400 Mongols against my 7.000 Byzantines. The Mongols acted like cowards, which may have something to with the fact that within minutes of the battle the Mongol general dismounted his horse, hugged the ground and showed everyone his arbalesters piercings.
I suspect that my biggest battle is about the smallest biggest battle out there, as I've heard players describe some outrageously large clashes.
As the Byz i did a battle against the Spanish and French. We both had around 4300 men (i had 44 units in reseve http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif)
i was attacking and i won with around 2000 lost, 1000 killed, 1000 POW
i was a fricken hard battle cause i had to walk acoss a desert then up a hill. By the time they got there they were exhasted. My Armie was mostly Byz gaurd with some Steppe Cavalry, Kat and Varangian Gaurd. theres was mostly fuedal and chivliric spears and swords, with some knights.

my biggest as of yet was while playing the turks, had 400 turks defending terbizond against 2000 byzantine invaders,i have the replay if anyone wants it.
One of my biggest battles was an easy one: 540 English troops against an all peasant army of 4000. My army consisted of Chiv. Sergeants, some Men at Arms and a few archers. Anyway, I lost 1 Man at arm and 2 chiv sergeants. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif Killed 2000, captured around 500.
Well, my biggest recent battle was 2,700+ Byzantines against 11,600 of the horde My Varangian Guard with honor 9 general and cataph. carved up the Mongol heavy cavalry. Not all of the enemy got on the map by any means, killed 5,000+ for a loss of about 850.
The bad thing is that now the Mongols just sit in Khazan and won't attack anymore Their Khan got good runner and now he doesn't dare attack. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif I was looking forward to some epic struggles against them and they wimp out I think it's because their starting generals have too low honor. They should all be about lv. 8-9. That would put the fear of God into Europe 15,000 horde with a lv. 9 general http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
As the knight said in Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
"Would it help to confuse it if we ran away some more?"
"No. And go and change your armor" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
12,000 Mongols (entire Horde) vs. my 6000-7000 Turks. Technically I haven't finished this battle because I can't find enough time to play. I started once and I repelled 3 or 4 Horde waves (without having to call in a single reinforcement I might add, thank God for Jannisary H. Inf and Trees http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif ). At one point I realized the Horde had mostly horse archers on the field. I realized that if I sit in the trees then the archers would follow me and try to shoot at me. Archers in trees shooting at targets in trees means that about one volley in about 100 makes a kill, if even that. So I COULD just let teh timer run out and instant vicory against the Horde. Unfortunately the timer for such a large battle is somewhere along the lines of.... 420 minutes. So much for that Idea.... And as for autocalcing, losses are about 6000 men on each side. Unacceptable. So now my Turk campaign is just sitting dormant while I play as the English untill I decide what to do.....

I feel your pain. Fortunately the Vikings Invasion expansion will allow us to save games between battles so that should lessen the pain during those particularly bloody years.
Don't any of you guys use Time Acceleration during battles? Simply grab the little hourglass-like graphic below the small battlefield overview map and slide it to the right to accelerate time as you see fit. Hit Ctrl-T to instantly accelerate time to maximum and once more to slow things back to normal. It really helps to move things along when nothing's happening or when there's no pressing issue that requires human intervention. I've fought some really big battles but thanks to Ctrl-T I've only had one massive battle take over an hour
In a SP campaign, as Egypt I fought against the Almohads when their army attacked my sieging force in Algeria. Ech army had over 5000 troops. It was a loooong and close battle. The Almos run over my lines in the first wave becuase I underestimated AUM and I anchored my line on a cliff. The Almos overpower my Saracens on that corner with AUM. It was a complete disaster and my general was killed.
Nearly all my reinforcements were desert archers and I thought I was doomed, but they were able to keep the enemy units at bay until my calvary reinforcements showed up - Mamluks and Khwarz, then the tables turned.
I forget the exact casualty numbers, but I lost about 3000 men vs. 4000 for the Almos.

Not my biggest, but the one with the biggest victory..:
I was holding Egypt with 34 spearmen(Hard setting)....
Got invaded by a English crusade of 1027 men, and by the byzants with 562 men at the same time...
Their losses: 1433
My losses: 0
Beat that... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

I'm betting Byz and English attacked each other, then your 50 * general massacered everyone else single handedly. Or you auto-calced and they were entirely peasants with a zero star general and you had a really good one. On a hilly province. With a river.
Me, French attacked Egypt which had about 2000 troops in it. I brought in about 5000 thinking that would be good to run up into the turkish pennisula too. From the entire eastern half of the map the egyptians brought in another 6000 troops. It was a long and bloody battle as their troops were better suited to warring in the desert. I lost almost 4000, he lost all 8000. My king picked up the 'butcher' vice after he slaughtered 3000 prisoners. That was the end of the egyptian empire and the end of the game came quickly.

top this, 10,000 + byzantines vs. 25000 golden horde, i alone had 150 units in reserve, took me about 10 hours to finish it.
10 hours? Blimey. I woulda passed out 4 hours before that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I'm not entirely sure of the numbers, but I remember having about 130-150 units in reserve. After about 2 hours I gave up and decided from then on to always auto calculate the results of such *huge* battles.
Would help if you could order the reserves. Its just so annoying to cycle through 20 byzantine infantry units before getting more archers or horse http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

How very true. Never have I felt such need for selecting my reinforcements as when fighting the huge battle against the mongols. Having used my starting archers and got a few archers from reserves, the infantry always ends up filling the ranks because they last so long. After that one has to sacrifice a lot of fresh infantry just to get more archers to shoot back at the mongole horse archers.
Having 3 extra buttons in the reserves menu could solve this: 1 for calling on an infantry unit, one for archers and one for cavalry. One could of course make it more fancy but this would be enough for me.
My 3000 Byz (def) vs 14,000 Mongol in Khazar. 350 mins (longest battle ever).
My 3000 Almohad (def) vs 6,500 Egyptian in Egypt. 126 mins (second longest).
My 2500 Almohad (att) vs 5,000 Egyptian in Palestine. It was fast.
I played as Danish. 8000+ of Almohads with 7-star general attacked my garrison in Flanders (2500). I had 9-star general. The battle lasted more than 2 real hours. In the end of it my troops were totally exhausted, I was absolutely, totally exhausted and they came and came...
I won.

Recently, probably the largest was 4200 Egyptians vs 1800 English in Prussia.
It was a long battle but most of the time was simply spent moving from hill to hill to pin down the remainder of Egypt's forces. Initial battle was good http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Fast, furious, and looked like I might get wiped out...the clean up was on the order of 2hours.
Had a larger one with 7800 Egyptian attacking 1700 English in Lithuania. After the initial rush was repulsed and stragglers chased down, the AI cycled its troops for withdrawl and the battle was over

On the flip side how about your shortest battle ? I am playing as the Swiss in a mod I made and I was defending Tyrolia against the HRE I had 1 unit of 160 Swiss Pikemen, 2 spearmen and 2 chiv.sgt units and 2 archery units,I placed myself high on the mountainside and hid my spears and chiv. sgts in the trees adjacent to my pike and archer units as the HRE made the long trek up the mountainside they went for my archers and when I charged my spearmen and sgts from the trees they instantly turned and ran no casualties on my side and a scant few on the HRE side they were to busy high taling it outta theremore time was spent walking up the mountain then on fighting the battle it was kind of funny

Like many others, my biggest battle was against the Mongols. They invaded Khazar with the bulk of their troops (some 16,000+) and Volga with a small amount (400), because it was held by only rebels. I had started a topic earlier on how to deal with this invasion because Khazar happened to be one of my richest provinces and was the mecca of mercs. I had 1100 troops stationed there and decided to "defend" against the mongols, sending over another 6,000 choice troops. Needless to say, it was intense.
I had a row of armored saracen infrantry and rested my flanks on the few trees I could find in the area. My general had 7 stars against ol' Kublai's mesely 4. I didn't move my line even though the mongols tempted me with cavalry feints and hordes of archers. I just targeted Kublai with my three archer units. Eventually the mongols hit home and i charged my Kats into Kublai's unit and eventually felled him. I thought maybe I'd get lucky and the Mongols would flee the field. They did retreat, but they came back, and this went on for about three and a half hours. It was finally 3:30 am, and I was sinking into despair, realizing that I would have to fight until 6 am, at least, for the timer to run out (doesn't night ever come!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif, but suddenly, after camel charges and all sorts of zany tactics, the mongols sent out perhaps their 12th wave, but they didn't advance all the way to my battered lines. They gave up, and just stood where they were, and I happily set the acceleration to 100% and night came. They went back to the waste from whence they came after their debacle in Khazar.
