Almughavars are merc only, correct? Anyone ever get them? I've faced them once or twice...

Do you get them if you play as Aragon?

Various merc only units rarely appear. Why? Because if you upgrade the province much at all no mercs are available. Have to wonder if I build an Inn in Argagon--does the AI produce Almughavars "behind my back" and send them off to AI Inns? I don't mind the Almughavars being only rarely available, but I would expect that from time to time one should pop up in Aragon even if I have fully upgraded. Same sort of comments for the Turcopoles...

I've had Almughavars ... they're great Definitely the best javelin troops.

I've never seen a Turcopole even once, though.

turcopoles are just turcoman horses who follow christianity for a religion, almughvars are awesome, awesome javelin units, i rank them up there with my favorite foot units in the game.

So how are you getting the Almughavars? When I capture Aragon I'm always teching up fast for the metalsmith. Never see any Almughavars. What would be logical to me is Almughavars of equiv. armour/morale/weapon appearing at some frequency once the Inn was built (perhaps only on turns where I don't build any units myself in that province...) Big problem I see with Almughavars as mercs they can't be merged, so after any significant losses they would be too small. Anyway, looking for tips as how to acquire them.

I'm wanting to try some modding just to play factions like Aragon...might want to make the Almughavars into a non-merc unit as well. They are already limited to one region so why not allow that region to build them as a normal unit?

I modded the game so that they can appear all over... And bam I had them popping up all the time. At the moment I have at least five of them in my armies and they have kicked rear quarters for quite some time... They are so great I even keep units with only 17 men left. Those javelins kill a lot and then they kill the rest in melee...

They can crush knights with that powerful attack of theirs and the spearbonus, and be sure to charge the enemy

almughavar are only availeble in aragon and only as mercenaries ,so teching up in arogon is a good way NOT too
get them

they are a quite unique unit and it will be interesting
when the argonese will become playeble in mp after VI

What does teching up a province have to do with Mercs..? Most of my mercs come from provinces that already have Fortresses and at least amattering of other military buildings.

I did get a unit of Almughavars once... and I didn't have Aragon at the time. Wierd.

Elwe, people have said (including some devs, and DD I think) that the more advanced the province is in terms of the tech tree, the less mercs you attract. Now if you start using them while having less buildings, you might continue to attract them because they go where they are being hired, so that might explain it. I have yet to see a single unit of Almughavars, I really want to though.

This is fact. If you look at the building file you can see that certain buildings improve/reduce the change of appearing mercs

And it says in the unit file that the Almugharvars are confined to Aragon.

The reason you sometimes get them is because the AI hires them and then disbands them.

I have never seen/used Almughavars. The chart that came with the game doesn't label them as specific to Aragon, but then again I have noticed a few other minor errors.

If I build an Inn in Aragon, I'll by able to buy them, right? I'll have to try this.

20 Factions are playable now and yes Almughavars are available as Aragonese. They are a very nice unit.

Orda,

I've got Almu's working now as Aragonese, but only if I also allow another major faction to build them (like the Spanish and French who are "local boys"--MTW won't load with the Aragonese as the only choice and gives me a message about missing info in "column 4" row "148" or some such. Could be the editor. The editor does a better job than my own attempts, but it seems to corrupt once in awhile so I have to do one thing at a time. Multiple items work well if added separately, saved, exit, and test; but rarely work if done together, wierd

With 20 factions how are you getting building related offices for Aragonese, Hungarians, etc? Whenever I try to add offices to Aragonese (even with unique names for each) the period I add them in disappears from the campaign menu--and the offices don't appear. Been doing it in Wordpad and keeping all spacings the same in what I change from the lines I copy.

What "characteristics" did you use for the Almughavars? "WEAK" seems inappropriate for a unit that is so strong (6 charge, 3 melee). I'm thinking about changing it to plain DEFENDER or ATTACKER so that they work properly in combat. Not really sure how much of that comes into play.

Having Almughavars as a regular unit should make the Aragonese in VI the significant force they actually were.
