View Full Version : It's a WET, WET world

Anyone else find the amount of rain in most battles excessive? It rains in almost every battle except for the desert. "Calm weather expected, or fine day expected" means it will only rain for 20-50% of the battle. I can tell the programmers are from the UK... Granted, I don't want or expect the forecasts to be highly accurate, but geesh, it seems like it ALWAYS rains. Rain often starts not two seconds after the "fine day expected." Dust storms in the desert have a similar problem. A bit more balance in the weather would be nice. Perhaps every battle in the UK should be wet, but a bit less elsewhere? I've lived in some awfully wet portions of the world (though not in Europe.) Is most of Europe really that wet (rain every single day?) Singapore isn't nearly that wet and it gets a tremendous amount of rain...

Not to say I don't like the weather effects. I'm just questioning balance here.

Down here in Australia that's just about the only rain we get http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Must be a bug... I know what you mean, its like the game takes place on LV 426.

Not really. Mostly just in NW europe (british isles, france, germany, scandanavia), which are pretty wet places in reality. In southern europe near the mediterranean, you don't see much rain.

Whats this now? The weather isn't behaving the way you want it to?

It can't start raining, I've got a battle today http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Maybe you should just think of it as some added realism, Beelzebub is right- Europe is a pretty rainy place. If fact, I'm offended if a battle in Ireland doesn't feature any rain at all. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't observe excessive rain in the game (ok, I'm English), at least when I am attacking. When I have archer superiority, the AI is pretty good at attacking me when it rains though.

If I remember correctly, Kraxis claimed to have heard from the developers that they agree that it rains to much in the game. It therefore seems that it wasn't intentional.

I live in the rainy part of Europe and am borne and raised in a much rainier place than that, and even I find it excessive. When entering battle I look at the clear sky and wonder how many times it will rain in the next 20 minutes.

I think the weather effects are great. I like the rain and the snow and the sand storms and I can understand that CA is proud of these effects, but they may have gone a little overboard in showing them off.

A developer recently posted on a thread here that the battles at the end of a turn go through the seasons: spring-summer-fall-winter. So the 4th battle (and subsequest battles apparently) will be in the winter. I do not see many winter battles because I rarely have 4 battles in one turn, at least not intentionally. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yes it rains a whole lot. It rains a lot less in Arid though, and I haven't seen rain in the desert yet. For some reason though, it only rains on Arid terrain when I take Napthas http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Know what you mean about the naptha's. I never build any "can't fire in the rain units" in MTW. What would be the point? It will rain in at some point in 80% of the "fine/clear weather" battles so the unit is useless/unreliable, certainly not worth their upkeep. It does seem to rain a bit less in arid. In arid I would expect it to very rarely rain.

The effect of rain on specific units is the main reason I question its prevalence. While I could accept that it might sprinkle a bit sometime during the 24 hour period of a "clear day", it would rarely fall within the likely ~8 hour battle window. Essentially, the probability should be about 1/3 of the average percentage of "wet days that started out clear". I haven't tried to work up statistics on this using tabulated weather data, but it isn't difficult to determine it is out of whack from inspection.

No, you're wrong. It also rains when I bring longbowmen.

I dont see excessive rain... but then most of my battles seem to be in the south. Tis a shame there isnt as much snow as there was in Shogun, I really liked the seasons method of play.

Yet to see lightning in MTW as well... lightning was very impressive in shogun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Well Europe was supposed to be much colder and wetter during some parts of the middle ages (the mini-ice age).
