are janissary archers useless? i mean, they share the same type of bow as janissary infantry, yet they can't melee like Janissary infantry, what's with that?? And has anyone noticed that the most useful turkish units are christians, not muslims? i.E: Janissaries, and AHC.

Shadehonestus' Totalwarassembly page gives the stats for Jannisary Archers. They have higher accuracy, lethality, and range than most archers. It seems their bow was given crossbow stats to bump up its power.
Also, Janissaries were not Christians. They may have been born to Christians, but they did not end up that way.
On a secondary note, I read an article on the Janissaries, and came across some eerie facts. Their armies carried great soup pots into battle, which were escorted by men of special rank. Their soldiers wore tall hats that carried wooden spoons for eating with, and had an officer corps that carries postions such as Djorbajibashi - Head Soup Cook.

Only one other army does this...

Janissary Archers aren't really useless. Like Kong said, they are more accurate. They also seem to fire faster to me, so if you're being rushed they'll most likely get maybe another 1-2 volleys in as compared to other archers, just my opinion though. I think they're worth it simply because of their nightcap-like hats http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
yup, janissary archers are better archers than janissary infantry, besides they have very good morale.

err..
i'll run a few tests, i'll compare janissary archers against janissary infantry, longbowmen and bulgarian brigands.

If Janissary archers don't tickle ur fancy try my Balkan accessories range with new units like:
Serbian Brigands
axe and bow, very fast on foot
Croatian Brigands
axe and bow
hides out in open
fast
good for ambush
and for some reason seems to kick my Skutatoi and Kats butt
each time in custom battles. gaahhhhhhhhhh stubborn slavs won't die

kata, your kilbanophori was awesome, but in the end, i decided simply to mod the kataphraktoi to make it better. Kata, how about making a byzantine psiloi unit?

ok, my testing is done
Archers vs. Spearmen: 27 kills in 4;00 of shooting
Janissary Archers: 37 kills in 3:00 of shooting
Trebizond Archers: 25 kills in 3:00 of shooting
Longbowmen: 31 kills in 2:31 of shooting
Janissary Infantry: 25 kills in 2:45 of shooting
alright, you were correct cheetah
The stats at the assembly are wrong. They have somehow managed to get the crossbows stats into the Jannisary Bows, but they use the same SBOW as the others.
In an old test I did before the patch to find out which archers were the best, the Turcoman Foot and Jannisary Archers averaged the best with Trebz and Desert Archers came behind them.
I didn't test Longbows as they are in a category by themselves (did test them and some of the others against Armour upgraded SAPS where they won with about the double kills).
Last were the Jannisary Infantry and Nizaris.
All units were tested 10 times under perfect conditions and then averaged the number of kills.

Janissary archers are almost the best archer unit in the game,i tested them against Longbows,J.infantry,Terbizond ,ottomen and Desert Archers, and they won.aside from that,Kraxis is 99.99% correct.
i luv em Jani Archers too, if only they had better melee they would be even better.

Demonarchangel I don't think i even sent you the whiole thing, right now I'm waiting for it to be uploaded properly by the MTW crew, i aslo uploaded the Skutatoi unit as well, excellent spearmen, good for defence only.
A Psiloi you say?
Would you like a:
Psiloi with javelins, armed with sword/axe
or Psiloi with bow/sword by fleet on foot, no armour and no defensive bonuses but with twice as many ammunition (48)
or Psiloi ambush unit, can hide out in open, very fast with bow/sword. armour piercing.
Take ur pick

Kongamato : Regarding your secondary note.
Since no one else is going to ask...
Ok, what is being suggested here? I read the source, and all I can say is...wierd. Why is this errie to you, as I can releate? What other army does this? What the hell, they weren't cannibals or anything like that were they??

They werent cannibals, just an army taking a little more pride in their cooking skills. The rest is MP talk.
You see, in MP there is this general known as Krast. Krast is from Tarranak. Krast lives in a coffin. Krast cuts heads off. Krast makes soup from the heads, therefore making him a Head Soup Cook - the same term as in the article but with a different spin. Accounts have also been taken that Krast's army takes massive soup cauldrons into battle to collect heads easier.
I made the point that some customs of the Jannisary army were remarkably and humorously similar to Krast's way of battle.
