View Full Version : Ninja weapons

So i take it like archers than you can choose wether you want Ninja to fight H2H or ranged?
Range will be crap though as i imagine it will Shurikens or Blowpipes they use??

Well I think that would have to be it unless there prime weapon is h2h and you press tab to get ranged weapons. I think it will be pretty hard to get long range using apipe. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I am no hero I just like to hit people in the head. :p
I thought they would hurl shurikens...
If the ninja are portrayed as they are in films, it can be assumed they will have superhuman accuracy and skill, and so will be able to decimate entire units with shuriken. But in actual fact I doubt a shuriken or blow pipe will make much difference to an armoured samurai. They should be reasonable in melee, however, and will prevent people simply placing their general far back beyond all the action.

The blowpipe is only used for assasination and the shuriken is for slowing down a pursuing or attacking enemy. (Though a have heard of use of poisoned shuriken.) So I doubt that they will use those weapons. Well I hope so, for historical accuracy.

hey, isn't it possible that the battlefeild ninja will use a bow? I remember watching a few old ninja movies (I think, "Revenge of the Ninja") and there was this one ninja with a sword, dagger, shurikens, a smoke bomb (I think) and he had an archer's bow on his back...so maybe they'll be affective archers...
Also, does the battlefield ninja come in a small group (say ten) or maybe pairs, or just by himself?
Apparently in groups of 40 or less

In melee the primary weapon of a ninja (despite what 80's orientalized movies show) was a sword, different from a katana, which was designed with such an angle and curve as to be more effective against the katana. Or so I've read.

The ranged weapon of the Ninja will likely be a Shuriken. *sigh*
Then again, it could be some form of small crossbow or heavier (armour-piercing?) throwing knives or perhaps even a bola-like weapon. I don't know much about ninja, though, so that's just speculation. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Hmm... And if they are Shuriken, they'll mostly be effective against unarmoured units.
Therefore...
Battlefield Ninja = Monk Assassins!
Yes, perhaps the ninja will be a rock-paper-scissors match for lightly armoured, brutally powerful units such as WM. Although I am told these will not be included as ikko-ikke did not exist at the time of the Mongol invasions. The great weakness of the ninja will probably be its light armour, so ninja will be effective at counteracting other ninja squads.
I'm pretty certain the ranged weapons of the battlefield ninja are bows.
Yo! I dont recall the 'Beverly Hills Ninja' using a bow-and-arrow!
Really though... are Tommy-Boy wannabes really supposed to blend with the foliage? Who are they kidding???

some ninjas used wooden training swords-bokken on missions... they found that they could be concealed more easily and there was no danger of cutting themselves and they could still kill and break bones..

Two points: firstly, Ninja's are not only the hooded dudes you see in movies - ninja's were people who were employed by daimyos to carry out special ops. Second point is that the samurai were the first people to employ snipers. There is evidence that retreating generals (sources claim that generals feigned retreat, although I'm not sure how possible this would be) left musketeers in their wake in order to pick off the leaders of pursuing armies.
I don't study Japanese history so I don't know if the sources ever referred to these snipers as ninja - it wouldn't surprise me if they were. Perhaps Shuko may know.

Brief but interesting, thanks TheDaimyo! From what the site says, I gather that these snipers could be considered as ninja as they did not adhere to Bushido. Does anyone else have other references, or know the sources?

Someone asked for the ninja unit size: it's 1/3 of the standard size, it ranges between 20 and 40 men.
