Remeber that a full 3d enviroment could lag hell especially when many times large battles in the current engine already lag a lot on a mid-spec pc, which is the most common.

But something like Ground Control engine should be great...beautiful graphics but no lag at all. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I hope that when I seen the screenshots of TW2 I see a major graphical improvement. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I've noticed that the Lag Hell as it should be referred to usually only happens when everything is rendered at once, even if you aren't looking at it.
There are great new methods out though that allow designers to only account for whatever you're looking at.
The lag in this game is a result of the advanced and albeit cumbersome A.I. engines in use, and the physics engine portions as well. That's why when it rains things come to a grinding halt in online games. Every bit of that rain affects every shot fired, move made, and so on.
I think the battlefield A.I. and physics routines need to be scaleable and taken in a bit. I'm hoping that they work on that reguardless of what their artistic visions may entail.
That, and the enemy A.I. in custom battles and campaigns is ferking stupid! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif

The reality factors are great and all, they shouldn't do away with them, but the calculations need to be done a different way so we can actually play 4 vs. 4 games online without needing a pillow to nap on between commands. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I think that 3D objects and unit models, instead of sprites, would actually help this if it were done right. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

for me no 3d units, why would we ever need that? first wait till everyone has T1 connections. The AI could be much better.

Ground Control ain't much of a strategy game since most of the times firepower wins the day and manouvers to get to your flank can be easily avoided. Ground Control has awesome graphics and all those units are 3D(drool). A new engine would make the terrain better and also the untis. I didn't spoke of making them 3D but just to look better.
Also if they work hard and make a good multiplayer the lag will go away!(I hope)

Ground Control does look nicer than STW (somewhat...), but that's because the units are in full 3D. It also has far fewer units on the battlefield at any given time - again because the units are in full 3D. It is STW's "3D terrain, 2D units" solution that enables us to command all those vast armies we all know and love, and they're a significant part of what makes STW unique. While the sprites could have more frames and all that, turning them into fully 3D men would detract from the gaming experience significantly. STW is all about big armies, and with current PC technology being what it is, 2D units are the only way to do it.

My 2 koku.

Yes but also Gc terrain looks better than Shogun.

The 2d sprites used by Shogun look more like age of empires style...

And Ground Control does have many units on the screen too and since it is full 3-d it should take up more memory thus lag more.

Well it doesn't lag nothing! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

But guys, the Shogun engine rocks and I don't care about graphics (even if they're beautiful, especially the strategy map)...I just wanna have great gameplay...! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

The game only renders what u see. I've made some testing with gunsmoke enabled. The huge smoke clouds lag like hell, but when i point the camera to a direction where no smoke is visible, the game runs faster again.

Well GC has all those graphics effects. The HUGE explosions and the various others effects. Shogun gameplay is top but l would also want better graphics.
