View Full Version : How much do the seasons affect the units?

Do different season change the unit stats?
ex: if you fight in the desert in spring, do your units suffer less stat handicaps than if they would fight in summer?

Does a lightly armoured unit suffer the winter climate? and what about a berber unit in the snow?

I have never seen winter battles in my campaign. The other seasons are hard to distinguish, but I guess they never change. I don't know why. I'd like to fight in different seasons, like in custom battles or in Shogun.

As for your questions, the devs say that desert units are disadvantaged in snow and heavy armored units like knights are disadvantaged in desert. I guess we'll have to take their word for it.

And another thing. I don't remember choosing to fight on a "fine day, all day" and the rain not to pop up sometime later I know the meteo forecast can't be always accurate, but it is never accurate when it comes to fine days http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Heavily armoured units fatigue quickly in the desert and all units fatigue a little faster in snow. No penalty for stats.

The devs have said that the weathermachine was not their greatest hour for MTW...

About winter and Nubians perhaps, well I have fought several battles with desert troops in the winter and they have not suffered from what I could see. That is strange as the Nubians are only dressed with a long shirt and a rope as belt, hardly dressed well enough for a blizzard.

I agree, I think it should be the opposite for winter, heavyily armoured units fatigue normally and lightly armoured units fatigue faster.

Mihai,

One of the developers explained the seasonal weather a few days ago. Don't know what sort of weather related hits units take, but he did say that in a given turn the 1st battle will be in Spring, your 2nd in Summer, 3rd in Fall, 4th in Winter. Other problem is that everyone after that (in a turn) is also winter. So late in a campaign where you might fight half a dozen battles, you will get real sick of winter...

Agree with all others though that the amount of rain in the game is whacked. Even rainforests don't get this much rain. In the game arid parts (not desert) also get a lot of rain on "fine/clear" days.

I like the weather. The best is when you start your battle in nice fine weather and by the end it's storming away. Nothing better than driving your enemy off the field with God applauding you on your way.

Snow is good fun too. Red and white make for such a pretty battlefield.

The problem is...few places on Earth are guarranteed to have rain somewhere during the daylight hours when the day started off clear/fine. So the complaint is not about the weather itself...it's the amount/balance that is off. Gunpowder infantry units are terribly handicapped by it. Most of us do want the random days where it rains in spite of a good "forecast". However, it shouldn't do it almost every time--especially within a few seconds of forecasting clear or fine.

Sometimes I have noticed that after I choose attack on a fine clear day before I start the battle I will go do some stuff.
When I come back in 5-10 min the game is raining. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif It went from clear to rain without me even starting the battle. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yeah, the weather chances even before the battle has begun. You can uses this to your advantage when you`re attacked and wait for the weather of your liking.

The one thing you have to remember is that the weather forcast is told by some Medieval bloke shaking the bones and coming up with a forcast for the day.

No long range weather forcasting predictive modelling and satellite imagry for our weather man.

You mean they didn't have satelites or weather baloons back then http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif?

Well I would like to put forward the arguement that heavily armoured troops should fatigue more in winter than non or light armour. All that metal must have been freezing compared with the natural warmth of silk and cloth http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Yeah, but from my own experience I've found I do a better job forecasting based on recent weather/typical seasonal patterns than relying on a meteorologist. Folks that live/lived in dwellings (or tents) with little climate control tend to learn how to predict weather a bit better than your average urban dweller today. Sure, without the weatherman most of us would not get adequate warning of severe weather or sudden changes. However, we are discussing the apparent "fine/clear days" here. Remember, few weathermen do better than the "it's going to be the same as it was yesterday" forecast. Their worth is in showing the overall patterns headed our way rather than precise forecasts. We aren't looking at long range forecasts in the game, but short ones.

When I was doing a lot of astronomy I got pretty good at predicting weather so that I didn't get up at 2-3 AM to find low level cloud, or head out to an observing site only to find a turbulent high speed jet stream that would make mush out of the images. My forecast was short range but to a more specific function than the weatherguy's. I can't imagine a general campaigning without taking someone with him or finding a local who was adept at predicting weather in the region of interest.

You're right. I used to live next door to an old farmer, he always knew what the weather was going to do. I suppose it's not helped by every year starting you off with a Spring battle.
