I've recently started an English campaign and was hoping to use Billmen, but after having build a Spearmaker's Guild I am unable to build Billmen.

In which era will I'll be able to build Billmen then?
Hopefully high era or else it's gonna be a long waiting time.

Can't seem to find it on totalwar.org's site (maybe I'm blind though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif) and totalwarassembly.com seems to be under construction.

Thanks for the info http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Now I've just have to get to high era and then start building those Billmen and see what they're worth http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've reverted to playing pre-patch. Although some of the features in the patch were good (better cavalry, trade, crusade pathfinding, etc) the inability to build troops until the High or Late period is a real bummer. It stops you from gaining advantage when playing in Early by out-building the AI. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
I'm imroving my modding skills and hopefully will soon be proficient enuf to play with the patch on, but without restricting troops to the later time periods.
Billmen and Longbows in Early. Cooooooooooool http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

That's why I rushed building a Spearmaker's Guild http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Was really anxious (sp?) to use them Billmen.
To bad they're restricted to high+ era.

Unless you misuse them badly, I think you will be very pleased with the Billmen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I like the restricted era stuff, for example, right when I was starting to rely almost soley on my Varangian guards in my current campaign, my supply got cut off, so I now have to be careful what I do with them to ensure they are there when I do need them.

Yep that's why in my Byzantine campaign I'm building a few more Varangian Guards just to keep them around long enough http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You can get the Billmen to be available in all periods, their is a good tool for modifying units at the Org download site look for Gnomeunitbuildproj_v2.0 it lays out all the unit stats and with just one click you can make the billmen available in all periods. It is simpl,e. try it and let me know or if you need some help with I will do what I can .http://www.nicknetwork.darkfiles.net/~mysmilies/games/diablo/Whaxatk.gif

Thanks for the offer, but I'll just keep everything the way it is untill I really find something that I want to be changed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Billmen; salt of the earth in the english campaign. I just love them. They really kick arse and are by far (in my opinion) the best allround unit in the game. Pair them up with longbowmen (produced in Wales, +1 valour) and you have a veritable mincing machine. Throw in a few cavalry units for pursuit and you will rule Europe.

They have rarely failed me and a fight, until they are 1/3 of original strength. then they can rout (others may have experienced differently though). You can really look forward to using them.....they're great

Billmen make up one-third to one-half of the infantry in my armies. A single unit can chew up a unit of heavy cavalry. Since Swiss halberdiers aren't available until the Late period, having billmen in the High period is a great asset.

Not used them much yet (but looking forward to) but they really pissed me off once. I played the Historical English Campaign and in the third battle as I spent half an hour positioning my troops and waiting for the assault, one full unit of them broke and run in the sight of Chiv Knights although their flanks were protected. Soon after the other Billmen followed. I would have obliterated the frogs (no offense) if it weren't for those pantsies...

P.S. Their fighting abilities do look promising though.

I can relate with you on that one. I was seriously dissappointed with the Ottoman units not being available till the late, even though thier stats reflect that of an early era unit. But there's no way in hell, that I could go back to that stupid crusade pathfinding in ver1. Swapping back and fourth in the opposite directions for the sole intentions of soaking up garrisons so that the AI could invade easier. It was the most deliberate Ai cheat, and frustrated me beyond unacceptable playing conditions.

I only played non-catholic factions unitl v1.1 because of this. Even as England, (opposite direction) you were'nt safe. Oh ya I recall the French many times walking crusades up all the way to Scotland, back to Flanders and then back up to wales.

Ohh.... didn't mean to ramble, but you can understand why I disliked ver1. I learned how to alter the crusader file. Very simple too. Undo the injustice, and make the simple changes yourself, but don't stay with ver1.
