Funny thing just happened in my game. I have control of England, France, Germany, Italy and some of Eastern Europe (cept for Hungarian reemergence in Poland of all places). The Spanish are pretty much the 2nd strongest power, with me being the strongest. They're currently amassing huge stacks on the border near Southern France, as well as a Crusade (I done got excommunicated...but the Sicilians were so tempting http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif ). Anyway, they have about 5 full stacks next to me. And every turn they move them back and forth with a neighboring province, which does not adjoin my provinces....they're indecisive I guess. I think it's because there was an Almohad reemergence in Portugal (again, whacky&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif, and there are large stacks there. Why the Spanish don't just split the group into two large armies is beyond me, but the AI seems completely befuddled.

I have seen the same thing. Playing as Russians I watched with some priests as the almos moved 5-6 full stacks between leon and (province below castile??) - they did this continually for about 15 years. They were mixing it up with the spanish but it seemed to be the same stacks moving together back and forth each year. It was very odd I think but not unusual it seems http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I've found that trying to understand the actions of the AI just makes my head hurt. The AI can be very wierd since in many cases if you have any one weakness they will find and expliot it, but if you don't they'll do wierd things like move back and forth between the same two provinces every year. It seems to go haywire if theres no way it can accomplish what it's trying to do.

i do this my self. The AI is tempting you to attack him. If you do, you get excomunicated. And you'll be caught of guard when you see how big his armies are behind the borders.

Or he's trying to keep his people happy. I do this sometimes as well. For example the AI notices that one of his provinces jumps into red loyalty, so he moves his forces there. What happens on the next turn is that the province is now loyal, but the province where the army has moved from is now in red, so he moves the army back. And this dance goes on, till you build some churches, or get another army in there. (however this is usually done with armys of 500 mmen max. not full stack armies)

It's wierd but the spanish are doing exactly the same to me The have about 4 full stacks with 6 or 7 7* or 8* generals. (I hope that made sense) They just keeps moving the backwards and forwards. I was sick of this and actually left a unit of 45 woodsmen in one province to tempt them to attack me. But 5 years later they were still organising road trips for the masses.

Well, this way they can guard two provinces with one army. An enemy can`t take the chance to attack cause the army comes back every second turn. The AI is doing this when they don`t plan to attack but waits for an attack on your side. It may also be that the AI want`s to test if you reduce your border forces then.
