I assualted 3 seperate castles over a period of 8(ish) years but each time the prov was captured i recieved no increase in command stars.
My King was only 1*.
Has any one else had this problem??
2 of the 3 had battles before the assualt.
I can't say for certain, but I suspect that a castle assault doesn't count as a battle when it comes to raising a commanders stars. This is from my own experience in the game, which is similar to yours.
I do not know if this was a bug or the programmers' intention.

i thought that there was some vice for like expert assualter? because i had what i like to call an assault team that just went around sacking castles and they did atleast 15 with the same commander and never got anything from it.

Check vices and virtues first. Perhaps a vice dropped him a star...I've had this happen before. Kings/generals add stars in the following order:
1st victory +1 star
3rd victory +2 star
7th victory +3 star
etc.
Losses subtract from the total so that a general having 2 wins and one loss will have +1 star from battle. One having 2 wins and 2 losses will have +0 stars from battle.
One having 4 wins and 1 loss should still get +2 stars.
Takes twice as many stars to get the next victory. If you have a vice that starts you out as -1 command then it will take many more victories to get the next star. I had a 8* King producing 0* heirs. I tried to get my #1 heir up to a few stars, but on the same turn as his victory he got some sort of non-battle related vice that set him back 1 star. So to get him to 1 star took 3 victories. Then he got another unwarranted vice and went back to 0 star or something like that...so I sent him off to his death under command of a decent general.

If the King/General start at 0* ... and the number of battle win required is double for each higher star (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ...) if the system in STW is still applied in MTW.
It happened to me once that one of my general (start at 5*) gain 2 star* after his 3rd consecutive wins and gain 1 more after only 6 more wins (not from V&V), all very tough battles. The first 2 stars are easy to explain. He might have started out with 29 wins (as in STW) and need only 3 more wins to reach his 32nd wins to gain his 6th star. The other star is from the "Skilled defender" V&V (he already has "Skilled attacker" V&V, so it make him like 7*). I don't think that stars from V&V counted as real star, so my general is now 6* (with V&V = 7*). In order to gain the real 7th star, he has to win 32 more battles (if the system in STW still apply in MTW). However, he needed only 6 wins to get his real 7* (now he's 8* general after only 9 wins).
Sometimes, it seems to be more than 8 lame wins for my 3* general to get his 4th star.
IMHO, it's either a bug or the old STW system has been improved a bit.

Sorry i haven't replied (went on hols and forget http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ).
Basic one this because my king only did three attacks on provs. Started 1* and after capturing 3 provs got nothing, vices & virtues had no command change.
Has anyone else done any tests?? because the 2 field battles had not given an increase either.
