Sometimes (actually pretty rarely) when I ransom back some of my own captured troops their leader, usually if he was lord of a province before his capture, gets the title of Captain. What is this title, where does it come from and what does it mean? Anyone out there know?

Heraclius,
You mean they lose the "lord" and get captain such & such?
Never ever seen this and seems pretty strange. I've seen the "captured" v&v but nothing like what you have described.
How many times have you seen it?

exactly. One particularly sticks in my mind, although there were three or four more, because he was the first. Before his capture by the Egyptians he was Lord Cerularius, Duke of Lesser Amrenia. Afterwards he became Captain Andronicus (I think that was his first name) Cerularius. I've also seen this happen to the leader of units that I've disbanded and who then became mercenaries.
Was he a commander of a noble (elite such as Knight) or non-noble (non-elite) troop class?
I think that the title "Captain" is given to men who was once a noble or was promoted to noble-class (reveived a title) but lost his noble status for some reason (trip off title, captured, disbanded,...).

I believe they were all Lords and commanders of Byzantine infantry (not sure if they're elite or not)
Sounds like a bug to me... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
