I was playing as the Spanish and the Mongols attack Khazar with around 7-8 stacks and Volgo-Bulgaria with around 2-3 stacks. So I decided to watch them using the matteosartori cheat.
My impression: MY GOD, they are dumb.
First of all, they took a few stacks and attacked Kiev. They also took all stacks from Khazar and attacked Chernigov, leaving only a few units behind. Of course, the besieged Byzantines would recover it. They would recapture Khazar and that made Chernigov revolt. It went on and on.
They never finished sieging Khazar, Volgo-Bulgaria and Chernigov. The 5-7 stacks now would keep moving from one province to another leaving rebellion or the besieged managing to reconquer. The Mongols managed to conquer Lithunia though. The huge number of stacks was dwindling and it was by luck that the Byzantine emperor was killed without an heir.
After that, it was the same with the rebel provinces. After a rebellion, Mongol AI would defend using all his stacks leaving another province to rebel. After only a few years, the Byzantines reemerged with 8 provinces joining the revolt.
Conclusion: AI needs to learn how to storm castles. It also needs to learn that it should leave enough troops in the province it came from and not use 4-5 more stacks of troops than is necessary in conquering or quelling rebellions.
