View Full Version : Does the AI run out of arrows?

I ask this because I was playing a Byz early/hard campaign with the wes mod. I had just taken Rum and the Turks attacked with me with a very horse archer heavy army. I was outnumbered and had only one unit of alans to counter there archers. So I hid in the woods on top of a very high hill.
I figured that eventually their army (filled with sipahis of the porte) would run out of ammo and have to charge where I would destroy them. Long story short almost all their archers, except the ones I killed on a brave and daring cavalry raid if I may say so http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif, kept on firing at me until time ran out, whereas my archers ran out aabout a quarter of the way through. So does the AI have infinite ammo?
Never noticed the AI to run out of arrows myself... although I don't think it tends to use them in such concentrated volleys as I do... could just be drawn out because they keep moving around.
Cheers.

i noticed that yesterday the ai seemed to fire for ages till my king got rested and was able to charge them again.

I've yet to come across the AI running out of ammo.
The AI definitely runs out of ammo. I've fought shoot-outs with horse archers where they fire until exhausted and then charge. I would assume they have the same ammo limits as us. It could be that sometimes it fires at a distance or in a formation where only a few troops use their bows - that would prolong the time to arrow depletion.

The AI runs out of arrows, or at least stops using them. I had one of those silly little battles once, where I had 20 Royal nights against 60 archers. It was pouring with rain, so I parked my nights in the woods, spread them out in loose formation, and just put the game on max speed and watched Generallisimo El Dufus of the AI fail to kill one of my Royal nights. After a couple of dozen volleys the enemy archers attacked by foot, and ran away a short while later.
months ago when the game first came out I asked the same question, and one of the devs (Gil I think) answered with a straight "yes"
It's quite easy to try out if you're still doubting tho, just arrange a battle between 1 archer unit and a strongly armoured unit of your own and just sit there and wait.

This has been discussed a lot of times now. The AI has the same ammo restriction as the player. When your men are in the woods, not all the enemy archers have a firing line and can fire, so it takes very long for them to run out of ammo.
