With the Christian factions some of my generals show cracked crosses - the bottom and top halves are separated. What does this mean? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This means that that faction has been excommunicated for aggresion against other Catholic factions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

They say time will heal the wounds in this case included the cracked cross bcos once the current Pope kicks the bucket and a new one succeeded him, the excommunicate will expired. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the quick response. Besides allowing other Christian factions to attack me - does being excommunicated affect a given generals abilities or disabilities on the battlefield? Thanks again.

No battlefield effect that I know of. The only real difference it makes is you'll have a greater chance of rebellion from particularly zealous provinces and possibly already disloyal generals.

Just kill the pope and all your problems will disappear http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The excommunication will be lifted when your king dies as well. You can lift the excom by allying with the pope's faction, but that can be difficult.

Deux: Being excommunicated means never having to say your are sorry. Once excommed, use the opportunity to go after easy Christian pickins. Like the guys on Death Row say, "what are they gonna do, kill me".

You got excommed for attacking other Christians. Do you remember a warning from the Pope about retreating and not attacking again for 10 years?

It seems to me that you lose some loyalty from your Gens (particularly Chivalric types, or so it seems) and happiness (especially in provinces with high Zeal) when you are excommed.

If you wish to get un-excommunicated, you can wait for your King to die, or try to ally with the Pope (this is hard and IMHO does not work if you are big power)

or you can, how do you say, expedite the death of the Pope. Sending in 5 or 6 assassins (high honour preferably) in one turn seems to work best. When the Pope dies all excomms are forgotten. Like the rastafarians say, Keel da Pope, mahn.

You can also get excommed without warning if you don`t let a crusade pass through your land.

I've had the Pope's faction offer me alliance right after beeing excomm'ed. I stayd excomm'ed nevertheless. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Does it only work the other way around??? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I never let another crusade pass through my provinces. They take my hard earned armies. i do build a crusade with that in mind, though, when an enemy faction is building up on his border provinces http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
