I also found the new unit description for VI: The Irish Dartman.

http://www.totalwar.com/community/images/dartman.jpg
Irish Dartman
Darts - actually light javelins - are a weapon of great antiquity in Ireland, used by the heroes of the epic tales as well as lesser warriors. While not as deadly as arrow fire, a shower of darts can disrupt many ill-disciplined units.

It seems like they've added some really good features.

but,i did notice a funny little detail it say that the game will cost 39.99
can some one who preordered verify this?

seems like a lot of money for an expension. or it it going to be a gold edition?

Thank you for the info.

Why is Norway only one province? There should be atleast two on that map, if not three.

I seriously hope this isn't true:

Quote[/b] ]and players who side with Byzantium will be able to add lancers to their armies.

Thats from the gamespot.com (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/medievaltotalwarvi/preview_6025083.html)preview. Lancers with the Byzantines?? I'm seriously already tired of those stupid things as it is...I hate having to take Spain when my opponent does just so they don't have a cheap advantage over me. Now every single game is going to have Lancers in them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif

Thanks for the link USMCNJ http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Looks like I have to get into modding now, as I can see a few things I would like to change.

1. The vikings came from Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The Swedes generally went East, while the Danes and the Norwegians went West. They basically divided Britain between them with The Danes concentrating on the South and the Norwegians the North and Ireland. Until the battle in Hafrsfjord in 872, Norway was ruled by a bunch of "petty kings" who had controll over an area. The map would be as divided as Britain, but with less diversity between the different groups. The Danes didn't come under a single king until a century later (Might be some Danes out there with better knowledge than me regarding their history that would say otherwise).

Much of the earlier viking attacks would be small groups of raiders, originating from the minor factions in the home countries. The period saw a lot of civil wars over the throne in Norway. Norwegians raided Denmark and the other way around. Actually, many of these civil wars was funded by raiding Britain.

So, by having the vikings as one faction with just two provinces, we loose a lot of potential action.

I would like to start as the king of one "viking faction" and try to become King of Norway. The battle could be funded by raiding Britain, Denmark etc. As king of Norway I might try to conquer the Danes too or take a piece of Britain. This actually follows history too. Going from hit and run to actually holding territory.

2. I saw an image of "viking cavalry raiders". The vikings never fought on horseback, prefering to ride to and from the battle, but not in the battle. I guess the unit was included for play balance and for those cavalry fanatics
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

3. The fact that viking ships didn't need ports is a great idea to implement. In reality that was their great strength. The ship's could land on any beach and go up rivers, giving a good chance of surprise. Quite necessary as they usually were outnumbered.

I don't know if there are more types of vessels available for the vikings, but the use of just one ship to simulate traderoute/invasion route is a bit too simple. The size of your invasion army depends on the size of your fleet. It might be possible to build fleets of say, 5,10,50 ships symbolized by one icon of course, but with a different prize. This would certainly influence your possible tactics.

By the way I once made a web page over viking ships, so if you want to know more take a look here:
Viking ships (http://archaeology.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/studentpages/MEngen/Vikinger/Index.htm)

Ok, that's a lot of talk about a modding a game that's not even out yet, but since I'm pretty green on that issue I hope someone with the skills and interest is inspired.

Cheers

Aelwyn, these lancers are "Byzantine Lancers", a sort of light cav that is nothing like the Lancers from Spain. I have found them in a screenshot of the game. Note that they are hidden under Mercian colors and placed in the Viking period. Their shields give them away though.

Not really.

It's 2:45 minutes long.

Pros:
Action with organ guns
Castle Assualt action (seen before)

Cons:
Little Description
Not any flaming arrows or other options shown

If you already have gamespot.complete then fine otherwise I would not pay just for that preview. It is nice to see the new game running though.

I saw that yesterday but gamespot was down so I was only able to read it today. They mostly talked about the Viking campaign and not about the changes to the original game.

Another VI unit description, this time for the Hungarians:

http://www.totalwar.com/community/images/szekely.jpg
Szekely
Light cavalry from the fringes of the steppes, the szekely are highly skilled and mobile scouts and skirmishers. Though too lightly-equipped for heavy combat, they make ideal raiders, useful for disrupting enemy formations before an attack by heavier units.
