How exactly do your units acquire honor points? I have seen units of 60 samurai take out 30 enemy and lose only 5 and not gain any honor, while another unit of samurai (in the same battle) would lose 27 warriors and take out about 20, yet they would receive one or two honor points. How is this figured? It seems at times like you are more likely to get honor when you take more losses or are at a distinct disadvantage. Is this true? Is there a formula out there?

I don't know this for sure, but I think honor added is based on the number of kills in the entire battle divided by the number of surviving men. So if you have a lot of survivors, then you'll have less honor, but more men.

here is the 411
each soldier in a unit has there own Honor. the units Honor is the average of each of the soldiers in that unit. Regardless of the unit kill ratio, the unit Honor can fluxtuate wildly depending on who survived the battle (the vets or the rookies).
here is how honor is tallied. when a soldier has 4 total kills himself, he receives a point of Honor. At 8, 16, and 32 heads taken they receive more points of Honor.
if a unit comes from a famous dojo (+1 Honor) then they will have 4 kills already and will need 4 more (8 total) before receiving another point of Honor.
Hope this helps
I am wondering if the Honor is calculated also based on the strength of enemy who were killed by a soldier. Remember there were cases that a soldier only killed 5 but boosted his honor by 3 points. (H1 - H4) http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I think Maltz is right as when my Cavalry chase down archers and YS and kill 100-200 they are lucky to get one honour. But YA can kill 5 and lose 20 and pick up honour?
So I think (it happens occasionally) that is depends on the difference between the unit and the opponent/situation. i.e. an YA that kills a monk gets honour but a monk that kills a YA that is running away gets a load of bad karma and no honour.

I agree that the situation the kills occurred in is a factor.Killing routing enemy units usually doesn't gain a unit any honor points,no matter the number of kills.Take that same unit and charge them into the middle of a desperate melee, especially if they are out numbered and/or out classed,YS vs ND,and even if they have less kills than men lost, they will gain honor points.

Not scientific testing, but it does seem to me that killing a R1+ Taisho gives a unit +1 honor and I would definitely say that killing the Daimyo gives +1 honor.
