View Full Version : Anyone else get the feeling.......
Some neato new units for the Danish/Norse along with the Brit Isles. New and improved locked in map for Vikings including..well..Britain. Be still my beating heart. Can't go to France let alone any other land Vikings had any major role in prior to 1100.
Been hearing for weeks VI sitting on G waiting on O. No new dipolmacy tweaks, unknown sea battle tweaks. Gee.. kinda makes ya wonder what CA thinks of the customers. Over all a few new trinkets yet nothing substative. Not a whole lot of competition in this genre but you can only push it so far.
Flip them a fish (VI) then the new and improved RTW title. Lather rinse repeat.
Ya, I know VI not out yet but after hearing VI been ready for WEEKS and reading previews hyping nothing but unit changes makes me a little less than giddy to buy another product.

To my knowing there`s a bit more than unit changes. Remember that it`s a add-on, not a stand-alone game. They already have a new campaign, new factions, a lot of new units, improved AI, the pre-battle scene with save game option and other new features. An improved diplomacy would be great that`s right - if they don`t have that in RTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif - but they have done enough for an add-on after half a year.

well im buying it.
let me tell u something, as for the amount that VI has promised if it delivers even just half of it ill be happy.
For an expansion Vikings looks great. You cant expect an expansion to be a completely new game.
CBR
Ya, remember how minor the expansion for Starcraft was?
6 new units & a few maps/missions.
VI will bring a heap of useful new functions & new units & new campaigns.
Nothing wrong with that for an expansion.

I think the game is going to be great and can't wait for some of the units, especially the Celtic ones such as Celtic warriors, the numerous irish units and welsh bandits. It's going to kick ass and hopefully game changes will allow modding some of the VI factions to the main game. Dudes, its going to rule,no question.

Yeah, just look at it as something that keeps you busy until RTW arrives http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
in other games you get patches that offer as much http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif expensive patch http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I'll be getting VI for sure but Operation Flashpoint comes to mind as just about every patch came with new units http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif And they were free http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yes CBR, but in Italy VI will cost 35 euro... like a new game
I am not so expert about game's price, but for me it is expensive for an exapansion http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

Well I cant find many new games that cost only 35 euro..depending on quality I guess... but I know several expansions that cost about 30-35 and some others are cheaper. After a quick look at a few prices I would say expansions cost about 60% of the original game and thats about the same for MTW/VI.

in any case the release of VI will bring new blood into these forums.
I was surprised to see MTW released at $40 usd. Perhaps CA didn't have a strong enough market to release it at $50 which is what all major releases cost here. At $30, Vikings is priced like an add-on to a $50 game which you could argue is what MTW should have originally cost, although, MP had lots of problems before the v1.1 patch. I know a very good player who got so frustrated with v1.0 MP that he still has not returned even once to try v1.1. The good reviews have keep MTW selling at it's original $40. I haven't seen any price drop, and the game has been out for 8 months. I would guess a gold version MTW + VI will be released at some point for $50.
With regard to MP, the add-on is more like a patch. Yes there will be more units and a few more factions, but it does not appear that the tactical gameplay has been significantly altered. There is no MP campaign. It's just battles. Some rebalancing of MP has been done, but MP MTW should have been given some balance tweaking in a patch or two right after v1.1 was released. Just the same, I'm glad for the rebalance because the MP game needs whatever it can get in this area. For players dedicated to MP, they have to buy vikings. Players who don't buy it will find a dwindling number of players online who they can join in battle. Even players who are primarily interested in using online mods such as CBR's MPWars which provides greatly enhanced tactical play are going to have to buy vikings to stay compatible with the version of the game that most people have. So for MP, it's $30 for basically some balance tweaks because we can't get them without the full blown SP part of the game. For me, the $30 is not a lot of money, but it is for many MP players.
Adding more units does not automatically improve the MP gameplay, and can damage it if the new units are not well balanced. CBR achieved improved gameplay by reducing the number of units available, and carefully balancing them. I'm talking about an investment of time and effort in balancing that Creative Assemble has stated they don't have the time or resources to implement.
Since nothing has been said by CA about the problems of seeing people in the playlist grayed out after returning from a battle or inability to host twice in a row without usually having to restart the game among other foyer issues, I would guess that none of these problems have been worked on. Accessability to the online database, which was originally promised, is also not working, and at this point it looks like it will never be made available. I know there was an attempt to make it work shortly after the release of MTW.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think Apeboy's concern is that while introducing new units / campaigns and a map to the game, VI will not address obvious pre-existing faults / short-comings.
1) Diplomacy - I don't need to say anything, we all know what I'm talking about.
2) AI in a more general sense - more intelligent moves both off and on the battlefield. Stupid bankrupt Danes... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
3) No sea battles? How could they leave those out? Will VI add the ability to launch an ocean map (they'd only have to create ONE, as opposed to desertflat01, desertflat02... desertflat87...) and board / blast enemy ships into oblivion? Okay, that's my personal pet gripe about this game... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
Has this (the sea battle) issue been addressed in depth before? If not, I believe it deserves a thread of its own.
Yes, I eagerly await the arrival of VI, whereupon my Hungarians shall envelope Europe with the sweet sound of innumerable cimbaloms, dulcimers and horse archers... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif At least until the Mongols arrive. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
But will VI be merely an add-on, or will it also provide much needed balance fixes and... well, basically, complete what I - and perhaps many others - perceive to be an excellent but as yet unfinished game?

I don't really mind, it looks interesting enough to stop my game stalling. Right now I don't exactly have a favorite game and VI will keep me occupied until TFT. I buy games for fun and sustainment, I've already managed to get myself pretty tired of Empire Earth, after all those months of playing it I'm too good at it to redo single player and MP feels too boring.
