View Full Version : A fourth trade good

A historic event called caravans (I think) added a fourth trade good to Tripoli. In addition to silk, cotton and spices it now trades sugar. The place earns over 3000 per turn with only a trading post thanks to a Turkish Navy that sails from the Black Sea to the Baltic.

I have never noticed this event before. I need to improve the merchants in Tripoli ASAP.

When does this even occur? That is an awful lot of money.

I was astonished. A master merchant can do this with two or more trade goods but I have never seen a trading post earn so much. The caravan event happened sometime in the late 13th century and right now it's about 1305 or so. The fact that I am at peace with everyone but the Mongols has made for a tremendous business opportunity. It won't last very long I'm sure. Soon the AI will go hostile everywhere but until then I'll spend more time in the bazaar than on the battlefield.

I know there is a Marco Polo event that adds trade goods to the Middle East, could it be the same?

Nelson:

A similar event happend to me with Portugal; something about explorers opening up new trade routes in Africa. Wasn't worth 3000 though. Happened in the 1400's.

I´ve also seen it once, and thats why I captured Antioch and Tripoli with a crusade in my current game as the English.
You can earn a lot of money in these two provinces, even without sugar.
In my last german campaign i also earned a lot of money in Venice as i traded with the whole world...until the Italians and Egyptians sunk nearly all of my ships. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Heraclius, yes, it was Marco Polo.

ichi, I have never noticed the Portugal event. I haven't played every facton yet so there's no telling what all I have yet to see.

yup, the same thing happened to me with the portugal trade event. My trade empire already covered most of Europe, so it was pretty useful.

My trade record was 15000 fl. per year from Constantinople.
As for Tripoli and Antioch, yes I know such things. As Turkey I was earning about 2500 fl. from Antioch and around 2000 fl. from Tripoli. My trade empire covered all Europe from Black to Baltic seas.

In the late period Tripoli is the province with the highest trade income. As Egyptians I got 9000 fl there and I didn`t have trade routes to the Baltics.

Just a note, these events are random...I received Marco Polo while playing the French in 1315...I'd be curious to find out what triggers them.

I must admit while creating my web page on trade....

I noticed how much money each new building development increased your income by.

Now I dont know about any others of you, but I only get to about two trade advances usuallly in most games. IT appears it might be worth the effort and cost to go all the way....

How far do most people go with building trading buildings, bearing in mind how much the castles advance costs ?

I build whatever is buildable. Improved merchants bring enough money to finance every upgrade.

After Gil Eanes came back from Africa in 1433 in my current game Portugal was trading in four commodities-olive oil, cotton, wax and spice- and was raking in 7288 florins a year. Not as much as the gem provinces in the East but still quite impressive.

Re: trade upgrades, it depends on the game...if you've done a good a job of controlling your expansionist urges and are at peace with just about every faction, it makes sense to build all merchant upgrades, even in one good provinces. I remember getting Norway up to about 1500 florins/turn once...the Master Merchant tacked on an extra 200/300 turn I'm guessing

The most I've ever gotten up to is Tripoli @ 9K/turn...
