How many have pushed the rout button by accident?

Did it yesterday, me playing Poland in a battle I was setting up my units in Teams, I was attacker so I was doing this quickly during the combat phase. I had my whole Spear units selected. When I was going to hit the flag to group the units, I hit the Rout button. 6 Pike units start running like crazy, 5 I get to stop 1 does not and runs off the map. I end up losing a close battle. (those extra 100 men would of one the battle for me) Losing my best general because of the stupid Good runner flaw.

Hehe once I wanted to rally a group of spearmen but accidently clicked my knights (general unit) and rout.

I have done something at least twice that is probably just as bone-headed if not more so.

On defense I will expand my mini-map out to full size and use it to first position my army. Then I toggle it off and on to fine tune.

Each of the battles in question were going to be a tough defense because the attackers had lot's of heavy cavalry. After making my best placement, I clicked to start the battle.

As the enemy knights approach my position, I realized that I had forgotten to toggle the mini-map back on. I did so, but it was still expanded to full screen. I quickly swiped my mouse at the corner tab of the mini-map to minimize it. Just as I swiped and released the mouse button I saw a weird ghost outline of my army. I suddenly realized that I had missed the map tab, and because I had my whole army selected at the time, I had accidently re-faced my whole army in a column.

I watched in horror as my army proceded to perform the marching band half-time show from the last super bowl.
Their marching pattern had just begun to form the words "you're an idiot" when the enemy knights crashed into their flanks. They immediatedly routed.

I found the nearest wall and banged my head against it about half an hour.

I always use G to group, but occasionally I tend to click on the units in battle rather than at their icons at the bottom and often I missed the unit I wanted to click on due to their movement but instead ordered the previously selected unit to move there, which can be... disastrous.

hehe, actually u know its hard case -

this game is probably at the top of the strategy game heap at the moment and its the only one i know of where you cant assign units to numbers. ie. ctrl+1=1.

Never happened to me (use G to group) but this is even worse:
I have a LogiTech DualOptical with a fourth mouse key on the left side of the mouse. I asigned this to "enter". That`s pretty usefull except when I accidently hit the key by moving the mouse to close to the keyboard. This way I did "ent turn" to soon a few times and started a battle before deploying my troops correctly.

I tend to get it when something has already routed cos I use g for grouping, but if a unit is routed I still tend to select the group then hit the rally button.

If its late in the battle & I've had multi routs, I may well ctrl-a then go for the rally.

The best occassion was in Shogun where I lost nearly all my army to a ctrl-a rout but was saved by my single reinforcement unit of WMs who proceeded to chase down & wipe out the ~4 units of SA the enemy had left http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

i think the wish is to be able to #3 to select the unit assigned to the number 3,

rather than having to hit [ctrl]+3,

personally i still find myself glancing down at the keyboard to find the [ctrl] key - i just don't use it at any other time...

Yep been there...

Also I use a gamevoice pad for voice commands...it is great as long as it interprets your voice correctly you get a few interesting stuff ups when it interprets sounds incorrectly...

Happened to me in a bridge battle it was 2v1 wit me and my ally attacking a person in SPQR ( i cant remmebr his name it was a while ago) Kyle i think. After beating back his lancers which had run over to stop me crossing my men then formed up on the other side and i selected my general and a Alan cav but alas it wasnt group i pressed it was rout http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
they ran over the bridge but i finally got them back and attacked while Kyle (i think) was still rolling on the ground laughing. We won but just barely

I once did this in STW, fighting a huge battle and i was on the verge of victry, then i accidently clicked rout and watched as my entire army ran away from 12 spearmen... ever since then ive been more carefull http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

You see, Ctrl- is the worst ergonomic combination on the keyboard, so it ends up not used often.
