Some stuff like the types of units that were used and what modern countries were called back then.

the game didn't teach me much directly but I bought it because I was interested in history (and because of Shogun) and then, through playing the game, got even more interested and bought and read even more books etc etc. It really is a great game though

Well before playing MTW, i wasnt really into medival history and all i really know of it is the crusade, hundred yrs war, black dead and t mongols reaching eastern europe. Now after playing it, it sparks me to read up more on wars in this period and so it does influence me to a certain degree. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Nah - it hasn't taught you that lol
Be careful now Mr. "Know it all" Hakonarson http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Game has not taught me much..given me a reason to read some more about the period of course and thats about it.

The game hasn't taught me much at all. I was, and still am, already into Medieval history and culture. I have read alot, and everyonce in a while I'll get to watch some good programs on Discovery Civilization channel or the other Discovery or Learning channels.
most of what i know. This game really peaked my interest in the medieval period, making me learn more about it.
I now know where the two-fingered salute comes from, before MTW, i had no idea.
I now know the crusaders had a taste for roasting prisoners on a spit and eating them.
Not much. Only the names and where about the nations were during the period. However, it gives some interesting topics to read about. From reading, I learn more and know just a bit more.

So you agree with me then - funny way of showing it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
I'm sure it is useful for inspiring interest and further reading, but as a source of actual history this game is about as useful as Braveheart or Monty Python's "The Life of Brian".
On second thoughts no - it's not as useful as the Life of Brian ...... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

well i didnt know who te alhomads turks byzantines were so now ive got a pretty reasonable grasp of medieval times.

The Almohades were nothing like they are in MTW - they briefly held parts of southern Spain and Morocco for 50 years or so before disappearing from history.
The Turks were slo not much like they are in MTW - historically they started as the SEljuk dynasty, and became the Ottomans only in the 14th century.
Byzantium - well it's a name, and yes it's based in Constantinople - I guess we can agree on that.......:)
So it's very much as accurate as Braveheart - after all England, Scotland and William Wallace all existed too....;)
I would not base my knowledge of the period on MTW. It's vaguely accurate. MTW has encouraged me to do my own research into the nations and their histories. This game has led me to expand my knowledge about the medieval period.

The game has given me a thirst for knowledge and books...
I knew part of the British history, but mainly Viking and 1066. But nothing about 100 years war etc....
I knew very little about the Crusades etc, but with books I now know alot me...
I have visited a number of Byzantine site in Greece, one large hill springs to mind http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif So the aspects of the game makes it very interesting..
I just think is a pity the game carnt go a little further in this period.
- 100 years war (map set in France)
- Reconquesta (Map set in Iberia)
- Crusades (Middle east)
- War of the Roses (UK)
- Mongols (East Europe and Middle east)
etc
There is so much more that could have had addons or offical mods released for.

It wasn`t the game itself that taught me much, but I learned a lot about the medieval period (and other things)here at the org. And I wouldn`t be here without MTW.
If one should read historical texts centering around the periods portrayed in this game they can be pleasantly suprised. Myself included Read some crusades stuff that was fun. Found more relavant information pertaining to this game and the book in AOE2 as well. Games make me smartfella
Got me interested in the period, although I am more interested in pre-Norman Britain. Isn't really accurate though, quite good for learning geographical locations.

Like most everyone else, the game itself didn't really teach me a whole lot, but it did pique my interest to do some light research into:
*Different historical figures that appear as generals in the game
*Weapon attributes
*Faction history
*Special events
The developers did a helluva job on this game, balancing game play with enough historical information to make it enjoyable.

It would be better if some of the historical figures that come out actually attempted to do their historical deeds.
So if you produced a prince (who was historically ambitious) he would attempt a rebellion if he didn't become king.
the game it self, taught me very little.
But the modding, WOW. I've learn about 70% of what i now know about medieval period in the last 9 month trying to make historicly acurate mods.
It has taught me that the the makers have absolutely no idea how Holland looked at that time, they included some of the ´polders´that weren´t there till 1950 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
(didn´t know I could post here?)

to be honest learnt more about history from people in this forum... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif
I agree, even if I was very aware of Medieval period from the many books I read on the subject. Hystory buff http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The Game taught me a lot: http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
I learned that pistols (er handguns) kicked ass back then.
I learned that Spanish cav were the most feared and despised of all the heavy cavalry.
I learned that sometimes when armies would fight back then, that if the cavalry attacked in a line the other army would be upset about cheating.
I learned that that Field Artillery got its name of "king of battle" from the use of Time-on-target firing techinques first pioneered in the Middle ages.
What did this GAME teach you about military history?
I learned all KINDS of interesting things about the medieval period For instance:
1. Medieval armies always fought in groups of no more than 16 units at a time If one of the first 16 units was eliminated or routed from the battlefield, then their general could bring on a new unit, but not before (and he couldn't decide which reinforcing unit to bring on, it was random).
2. The highest hills forming the best defensive positions in medieval times were always on the borders of a province, never in the middle (However, enemy generals would accuse the defender of "camping" if he set up his army on one of them). This is because Medieval armies were never allowed to march beyond the borders of the province for any reason, except to flee the battle.
3. Medieval Kings were almost invulnerable warriors. Sometimes a lone king could fight for hours against 100 or more men and never be killed (unless he got hit by a catapult stone).

Lots of what I know ended up in the game... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
...but not the really horrid, sick stuff about some of the Popes. And some of the Kings. And their Generals. That was beyond the pale.
And Noggin the Nog and Nogbad the Bad were cut at the last minute, but you have to be of a certain age and British to understand how sad that is. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
But RTW will include the vomitorium, and that *is* sick.
