In my current campaign the burgundians emerged for the first time. In my previous 5 or 6 campaigns the never show up. Only the swiss emerged in every campaign. Are there certain conditions which must be fulfilled?

I've seen the Burgundians a few times, I dont know what triggers them though. I thought it was probably just if there happened to be a revolt in the appropriate province.

Try keeping the loyalty above 110% in every province and you'll never have a revolt.

In order for the burgundians to emerge, there most be a revolt in burgundy, somtime between 1300 and 1400 I think.

Then it must be coincidence that the swiss emerged in all the campaigns I played.
Btw, I noticed only in my last game the historical event, that some local lords around switzerland signed a contract about... I don't know anymore. And this was not the emerging of the swiss faction. Anyone seen this?

How minor a faction? I have had the people of Novgorad re-emerge before? They had been gone for several decades, and then suddenly came back and were attacking 13 provinces (including Mercia, which they had held only for a year – I guess their soldiers there were very fertile?)

The historical event indicates that if switzerland rebel in the following years, then the swiss will emerge. It is probably ment as a heads up to the player.

If you wish to prevent it, keep loyalty well over 100%, through spies, assassins and/or a sizeable garrison.

A faction can re-emerge in any province it has held, even if it was for only 1 year. They respawn when the underage heir comes to age and one or seveveral of the faction's former provinces is in revolt.

Minor factions are factions that the player can't control. These are the Golden Horde, the Papacy, the Sicilians, The Aragonese, The Hungarians, The Swiss and the Burgundians.

The Papacy is the most likely to re-emerge because of its unique status in the game... I had Rome and the Papal States with nearly 200% loyalty a good garrisson and no Rebels and the Pope Turned up again and conquered them.

(he then had a Loyalist rebellion the following year that really made me laugh) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Keep big armies around Italy, that guy hangs around worse than a bad smell...

The Pope will ALWAYS come back. Always.

As to the rest, if there is a rebel province that they previously owned, they will usually come back there. If you let loyalty drop below 120% you risk a chance of a rebel revolt or a faction reappearance in that province.

120% loyalty is the key number, above that and no revolts, below that and you have a good chance of revolt.

I've found the best use for Rome when conquered is to strip it of everything valuable, tax it to shreds, and beat up the peasant revolts that occur there ever 2nd turn for a few thousand extra florin

And when the Pope returns he usually has a super-duper army but it's fairly small and has to fight a revolt straight away - whichever side losses I win http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I prefer trapping the Pope in the Papal States, and taking Rome for myself, just for the sake of it. (It's also a part of a GA goal for the HRE.)
