View Full Version : Target, What about those reinforcements?

Hi Target,

In several forums some questions were raised on where reinforcements appear in battle.

Do they appear at random, resulting in getting stabbed in the back by them even in Bridge battles?

Personally I like it, as I usually butchered reinforcements in STW, maybe now they might sometimes even pose a little threat...

"Hey Target! Explain your reinforcement code!" It's like that day at the office all over again...

OK. The initial point at which reinforcments decide to come on is random. They choose a point at the edge of the map and consider the danger of coming on. If they're close to the enemy they move away a bit, unless loads of their mates are quite close by as well, then they'll consider assembling there. Basically the reinforcements find the nicest quietest point to come on whilst do the most mimimum amount of work (read cpu clock ticks) to find it. Nine times out of 10 they'll appear on the other side of the map, well away from any scraps that are going on.

There was going to be some extra bits to go with it to make it all less random and more user controlled, but I ran out of time.

Thanks for the answer Target.

I should be getting mine today and this is bothering me already on the reinforcements. Obviously, I don't know your code, but could you make the available area 2/3 the map by locking out so that if the attacker is pursuing the defender off the map, the attacker will only have to worry about the 1/3 closest to the defender's starting side and the middle 1/3 of the map?

It would cause me great distress and annoyance to lose a battle because some 2 man unit is hiding in the woods by my start location!

Well, on a normal map I could fix that by turning off the timer. I leave it on because otherwise I could really run up a butcher bill on some of my defensive stands.

However, on a bridge map, it is easy to assume that any other "off map" crossings near enough the battle are picketed and you would get reports of other crossings and could react. Unless maybe you plan on adding an operational level to the game? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Well, the only battle I've actually lost (yet) because of this issue, it wasn't a 2-man unit, but a full unit. It apparently appeared as far away from the action it could get and just sat it the woods. By the time I scouted it out, it was too late to bring enough force to bear.

'Honor system' on different server or database! So old shogun and new do not share same data space! Thus, your old shogun names must be re-created when you play WE/MI. So, in a way, you start from scratch in WE/MI -- even your record is wiped out, for you do not share your persona with your old shogun self/selves!
