View Full Version : New maps, old maps: compatible playing xpack/warlords?

Does anybody know if the old maps people now have will be useable with the xpack/Warlords version for online, custom battles?

Understand the new maps will have new graphics, and some of the province maps will have significant changes to size, ect (understand some will now have coastlines).
Kind of wondering if to use the old province maps whether to change filenames to "---old.**" before losing them by loading up the new stuff, and then whether they'd be useable if I did.

Hope

Won't surprise me to go through a lot of hell on map compatibility in the first stages of the "new stuff" use.

Soon in the chat room:

Player 1: "Is that new Hyuga or old Hyuga?"
Player 2: "New Hyuga."
Player 1: "Damn I live in ---, and don't have new Hyuga yet."

. . . . .

Same question also on current saved games.

Appologies in advance if this has already been covered elsewhere.

My guess is that v 1.13 will enable compatibility, including bigger maps with the old game, but as the name implies, it's a guess.

I'd wager about three to one that saved games will be lost when converting to the expansion version.

Thanks Anssi for the opinion. Now that you've mentioned it they've been pretty silent on 1.13, but that's a whole another topic.

Sorry - completely missed this thread.

Yeah, the old maps should still work OK with the expansion, unless you lot have done some weird and freaky stuff with your custom ones.

Having said that, we tweaked most of the old maps for mongol invasion, so there may be slight differences with the default ones - and some of them are completely different.

I copied the green map into the warlord/battle/maps folder, and it works. Gustavus has apparently also been using the green map with the new game.

It's very unlikely that the new maps will work with pre Mongol Invasion/Warlord edition. At the very least the textures will get corrupted, but it's more likely the game will crash if you try to run a new map in the old game.

To put it simply, don't use the new maps in the old game. Don't use the maps you make with the new editor inthe old game. You CAN use the modified maps from the old game with the new one though.
Same thing goes for the modified historical battles. You'll need to install the maps or the Map Packs into the Warlord Edition by hand.
On that note, I'll be making several new and updated map packs for BOTH versions of the game - this week! Presently we're up to 102 mod maps for STW, total. I dunno how many we'll have for the first WLE/MI Map Pack but I think it will be a fair amount. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
