Yesterday I got scared real badly. I started playing The English in the late period (1200 right?). France suddenly took over Scotland from the rebels. Man this can not be true. So I quickly produced a bunch of longbow units, some men at arms, some spearmen and my king went along.
As I arrived at the battlefield, I hit pause to check what the situation looks like. OMG I thought as I circled over the enemy positions...2 feudal knight units both carrying about 60 to 80 men. Also 3 royal knight units including the french king and 2 heirs. Other than that 1 men at arms unit, 2 peasant units of 200 and 2 crossbow units. Not to mention that France was holding the highground and since I was attacking, I had to attack as the AI will never attack in a defensive game.
So what was I today with 8 longbow units vs ll this cavalry. Well I guess I should try my best.
In front of my position was a knoll with fairly steep sides. I guess this would be my ground. I pushed all the longbow units onto that knoll not using formations anymore since it wouldn't fix, I just stacked em up, 8 * 120 men. I made a U-shape around the longbows using 4 * 120 chivalric men-at-arms. My royal knights with my king would be in the rear of my archers. Than to my left was a small knoll with woods. I knew that cavalry wouldn't attack there so it could be used to hide some shock-troops. My 2 * 200 spearmen.
Between the wooded knoll and my centre, I pull out that men at arms unit to make it interesting for the enemy to attack through the wooded knoll, containing 400 spearmen, into my centre-left.
Well, you guessed it right. The french just sat and wait uphill. I had 1 longbow unit understrenght, about 90 men. I send them skirmishing. They made some good hits on their peasants but they had to run like hell since all french cavalry was coming downhill
Now France finally launched an assault. Their infantry in the front of their cavalry. They cam in range and 900 longbow's starting pouring down arrows. Their peasants and men at arms soon fled with huge casulties. The sam goes for their crossbow's but they sticked around.
Than his cavalry came. The royal knights charged uphill into my men-at-arms. My own king, a lazy ass 2 star, attacked their royal knights. To make the diffirence, I had to keep my longbow's fire at them and thus hit my own troops. One must make sacrifices to achieve victory.
1 of his feudal knight units stood to the royal knight's rear. I ordered my longbow's to fire at them. In about 5 volleys, they were wiped out.Now their other feudal knights attacked through my centre-left and my spearmen, not knowing the threat on their flanks. My spearmen rushed down supported by a unit of men-at-arms. Results not required.
By this time I ordered all my infantry to attack his royal knights while my longbow's fired their last arrows on fleeing enemy infantry.
All his royal knights died, the french king was killed by my own 2 star king.
Next time I see a strong cavalry opponent, I shall not be afraid if I have my welshmen with me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
