Even much more dreadful than in their parameters. They can crush your army in one moment A single way I found to get 'em down is

to take two cavalry units for each guards unit,
have one to charge guards then whait for few seconds and charge 'em with your second cavalry unit. At this moment rush back with first one immediatelly and charge again, rush back with second and charge and so on and so on. Guards will melt like snow.

yes the VG are pretty tough, but a good equivalent is the English BM or for later games the SAP.

They tire quick, when they're exhausted they'll rout pretty quick...never had much prob with them...

Relatively cheap way to kill Varangian Guards is with 2 units of Militia Sergents .
One engages the Varangians to hold them whilst the other flanks {even hitting them in the sides will get it done} .

Of course , if your Danish , just offer them lots of big titty blond women ; they're Vikings after all ... that might just get 'em http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

In my Italian campaign, I had to dispose v7 Guards and I did it exactly that way. They didn`t melt like snow, however.

This happens time to time. It's a complicated art to use cavalry in all cases.
