Hey guys, I am a new member to this forum (I just installed MTW today and I have to say it's a great game. One of the questinos that came up while playing it though is if it would be possible to recreate battles from LOTR. I just saw LOTR: Two Towers yesterday so I have to say it was an impressive battle. Anyone got any suggestions or should I just stop hoping? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

While it's possible to make some maps that resemble the battlefield of LOTR, like Helm's Deep, keep in mind the game engine makes some things impossible.
Let's say you made a castle map like Helm's Deep, a few walls backed by impassable cliffs. In MTW, you wouldn't be able to place your men on the parapets. MTW also lacks certain siege equipment, like the ladders and hooks and stuff.
But the problems are minor compared to the possiblities of creating some great maps (hmmmmm.I just got an idea!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

It should be possible to mod some of the straight-up battles. (no balrogs; wizardry; nazghul...hmm)
But thats a question for the gods of mods whom are kept in the Dungeon. Muahahaha http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

the short answer is yes, you could mod the game to have battles like lotr, and yes, there are some restrictions on that, like soly mentioned.
the longer answer is that you can mod the sprites, the campaign map, the unit stats, the building stats, some of the AI stuff, battle maps and which maps are used in the campaign, money, resources, tradable goods, text stuff like descriptions, game length, how and where you can travel on the campaign map and numerous other features.
some of this is very simple, and some is pretty complex and some we've even bothered to write up so that others can make use of it ;) and yes, the dungeon is the place you'll want to visit for all this. it's not really a dungeon, btw; it's more of a no bars, self imposed, low security, iron mine/workshop, where all us little trolls beat out new things to drive others crazy with ;)

Great replies guys. This had led me to start thinking about how muhc potential this engine has for modificiations. I am currently thinking of creating a MOD site for a LOTR conversion. Hopefully I will be able to learn from the great minds that live in the dungeon like solypsist http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif.
Thanks again.
