OK, here is the story. I am playing a GA campaign with Poland starting in early. I am doing quite well so far, I have made allies with everyone but the Novgorodians and the Purple Menace and have made it to 1176 with no real problems, I control Poland, Silesia, Pomerania and Prussia with a pretty decent trading route. I feel pretty secure because my home provinces are fairly well defended and I really do not have any enemies that border me, just the HRE and Hungary plus some rebels. My King (the inbred one with a taste for young boys) decides he needs to raise his influence so I send out a Crusade to Perasleyvl? sice it is rebl and still completely undefended. I get there and start to build up the province a bit so I can get Steppe Cavalry and Horsie Xbows and I start churning them out. My crusade still has two units of Order Knights (just modded Templars with different shields) and some Royal Knights from my home provinces that came with the crusade.
For 100 years, I have avoided war with one of the factions, but the Byzzies decide to attack Poland since they have moved up into Volhylnia. I repulse their attack in a bloody battle that sees my mighty Cavalry and Mounted XBows decimate their infantry before they can even get to my lines. Since this battle went so well, I decide to counterattack using Perawhatever and my Cavalry based units their. I look around for a good place to attack and see their King in Khazar with a small suppoting army of Treb archers and peasants. WOOOOO HOOOO, I think this will be an easy victory and they have no more heirs, I can crush the Purple Menace for good. I RULE. I move an army of 6 Mounted Xbows 6 Steppe Cavalry 2 Order Knights, and 2Royal Knights into Khazar for what I am sure wilol be an easy victory http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . The battle begins and it is a stunning day, sun, flat terrain, not many trees, this will be an easy win. I flank the enemy positions with my xbows, 2 on each side and 2 in the front. Their Kats decide to chase the units I sent to the right flank and I am OK with that because it opens up their peasnts and Trebizonds to the speedy charge of the Steppes. Their Kat is chasing two of my Xbows all over the right side of the map, getting slowly but surely whittled down by the much faster ranged troops. My Royals move up in front of their remaining line (2 treb archers and 4 peasants) to draw some fire while three units of steppe cav go to each side and begin the charge into the flanks, confidence is high. All of a sudden, two of my Steppes break off the attack and rout. They run directly into a peasant unit who proceeds to butchewr them, The same on the other side. WTF http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif I send my Royals into the from of the line, right at the Trebs thinking that they wil break quickly but nooooooooo those ridiculous little archers stand and fight while the other unit of them spins around and stars shooting point blank into the back of my knights. I try and extract them from the situation but they will not go, I decide it is time for drastic measures so I charge my last two units of Order Knights into the backs of the archers and they finally break and run. I then see this tank of a unit come charging behind my Orders, It is the King and his three remaining bodyguards (8* BTW) being chased by 3 Xbow units (my other three broke and ran when the Steppes did). He slams into the back of my Orders and promptly kills 4 of the remaining 14 which makes them waver long enough to lose another 2 before they gather themselve, turn and begin to fight. The last unit of Orders charges in and I kill all but the King (8* and pissed off by this point) Their king finally breaks and runs, pursued by my entire remaining force, and escapes off of the edge of the map. I win YEEE HAAA http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif . The final total was MY guys killed 260 Purple Devils and captured 0 (they really deserved to all die, they were mocking me the whole time http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) I lost 350 men and ultimately a lot more. The next turn the Purple Bastards attacked Khazar and Reyslavl with very large stacks led by Varangians and Treb Archers with a few Steppes and Alans of their own thrown in. They killed every last man I had in those two provinces, causing my Kings already low influence to drop even more and a civil war break out. I get to fight it when I get home from work today.
