So I was the Danes close to the end of a war with the Italians. There were no battles going, just we hadn't agreed on a ceasefire. The next turn the Italians turned around and started attacking the Papacy. At the end of that turn I got the move your ass out of Italy or be excommunicated message from the Pope. I was like http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif
(And yes I'd always been in peace with the Pope)

Maybe your king doesn't have enough influence,so Pope doesn't give damn about your nation,or Pope just doesn't like you.It happened to me numerous time,if you can't stand the Pope any longer, then attack him.. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Well, the Italians are about to wipe him out, so, (quote Morpheus)Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.

Your enemy's enemy is your friend -forgot who said it.

I haven't been excommunicated yet (thank God) but I was wondering how that would happen? In battle I usually execute all the prisoners so could my actions lead to being exommunicated? Also what happens when you are excommiunicated?

Pope in the game is like peasants. The sooner you can do without, the better.

I was excommunicated once (and the very same turn my King died, so imagine the mess) because I kept attacking the Germans. It was actually not as bad as I had imagined. The generals and provinces lost a big trunk of their faith (partially because of the new weak King though). A lot of Catholic alliances broke up with me in a following couple of turns. But I didn't really have any big problem. I guess at the end of day if you have a large enough army you don't really care about what the Pope says.

The Pope can be annoying though... Once I was playing as the French High/expert and I was obviously warring with the English, I was winning, had okay trade, had alliances with the Pope, HRE, and Spain. My people were moderately happy. So suddenly the English attack with tons of units and in a few turns attack the province my king is in. My king happened to have 8 stars, so I thought I could take it, when a siege engine fires its first shot and it comes and kills my king My units all routed and I lost, but not with many casualties. After I defeated the English attack, The HRE attacked me. I repulsed it easily, and counterattacked, and then the Pope excommunicates me. My people revolt while England attacks again, My alliance with Spain ends and I lose most of my trade income, and I lose half of my provinces within 10 turns. I lose later, and now I realize how the Pope is dangerous.
