View Full Version : Trade income vs. Provencial income

Hey again,

I play the English, always starting in the Early period.

My usual strategy is to start off taking Wales and Scotland, bribing for Navarre, and eventually sailing for Sweden. I usually don't make war on anyone until will into the 12th century (around 1150 or so).

I build up sizable trade routes, with goods from Sweden, Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex, and Aquitante being traded with Flanders, Brittany, Denmanr, Leon, and Portugal. My trade income isn't bad, usually I have about 3000+ Florins in profit every year.

The problem the last time that I played this way is that after I do start fighting, the French and Spanish have a Manage a Trois on me and usually beat me back to the stone age.

So, this time I thought I'd try a different strategy, I left Wales and Scotland alone and went after the French from the get... I took Flanders, Britany, and Ille de France. Leaving them with only Tolouse and Champagne.

I will now take Wales, Scotland and Sweden. And, after the Papal restrictions, I will invade Champagne, leaving the French with Tolouse to avoid any unplesant reapperances.

This all sounds good right? The problem is that now my trade will be useless. Really all that I'll be able to do is trade with the Spanish since Denmark will be falling to the HRE soon.

My question is will the income from my conquests match up to the trade income that I had before?

Thanks for any advice,

Rex

Well dont be discouraged yet about your trade. You must build a fleet of ships to have in every sea zone preferably, this way your trade extends to everyone. Just keep from pissing off everyone, I had most of the map in my Byz campaign but was still managing 15k a year profit. Get those pesky French out of your way, set up a defensive line and build ships. I did like you started with trade but the Egyptians and Turks sided against me and started to take me out. Man bet they wished they hadnt done that now.

Keep on building ships and extending your trade routes across the whole map. You will get a huge income along the way. Income from conquest is good but it is a one shot deal. You need to build a residual income. Income is the game IMO. Click on the coins button to monitor your yearly net cash flow.

I like that you took Flanders early, it is a rich prov and beating up on the French is never a bad idea. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You could of course let some provinces rebel so you can recapture them and get a regular income that way.
Fot trading you really need to take a mediterranian port(toulouse preferably) early on and get some ship construction there because it's by extending your trade routes from the atlantic ports to the med that will boost your income the most.

I tend to play the English too from the early period. I find that if i attack Flanders and the Isle in the second year then hit champ next ( the king tend to retreat to there) I can wipe out the frogs before he has a son. Then just finish off the rebals in tours and Brit. Then i send a prince up to the Wessex to gather an army to do scotland and then wales. It goes so fast that I still wait on my first ship to take Erie then set up trade routs.

Eh, careful with the slurs Geoffrey. The correct way to say this is the Frogs - don't forget to capitalize it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Sorry, a joke in poor taste.

Seriously, Frog is hardly a complimentary term for the French and we do have a number of French patrons at the Org. You must be mindful that you post to an international audience here.

Have the same problem Rex.
I am planning to leave a few nations with only 1-2 coastal provinces to keep the trade going until I can finish the game in quick move. However, I can image that with many development in your provinces you could survive without trade, given that you would not need to keep 1000 troops in each province to keep it loyal.

Bah. I usually call myself a Froggy... as long as I'm allowed to call the Brits the Roastbeefs

That is not THAT offensive. After all, it happened to me to eat Frogs, once in my life. Not bad at all... The point is, Frog is now common enough to not be received as insulting.

Ang you should try the Frogs intead of the English in Early : far more difficult, thus more enjoyment if you succeed to unite the kingdom again.

Geoffrey, I didn't really think you meant any harm by the remark. Since you are new I thought I'd point out the international flavour we have here. You must be a little more aware of the environment, that's all. Although el_slapper isn't put off by it, another French patron might. In cases like this the use of an appropriate emoticon might help difuse any such feeling of offense. For example, my http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif after the comment about capitalization.

Anyway, carry on folks
