Is there any advantage to leaving troops garrisoned in a castle rather than standing in an army? In STW if you lost the battle your forces would retreat to the castle for a siege, is it the same in MTW? If so, why have some in an army and some in the castle on the campaign screen?
Sorry if the answer to this is glaringly obvious but I havent been able to find out.

Well, as you said after a lost defensive battle your troops will retreat to the castle anyway, so it does not matter where you have them before the battle. I guess it is only a meter of how crowded your map is.
I put in the castles the standing garrison and the governor, so not to move them elsewhere. Otherwise, I leave the excessive army outside.

Hi Asmodeus. Welcome to the Org and its Entrance Hall.
I usually don't garrison the castle unless forced to via a defeat...it's just too drafty in there for my tastes. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I will admit, Smok does have a nice suggestion if you wish to keep the governor at home and not risk accidentally moving him.
