MTW:

Pre-patch, playing Egypt, GA, SP, Early. Reached 1171. Each time I end year (after land battle, sea battle, and assassinations, you have captured Serbia, etc.) the game crashes, returning to the desktop with no error messages. The first two times this happened the last visible event was a naval battle, so I altered my orders to NOT attack at sea, but the game crashed anyway. I loaded my 1170 backup, ended 1170 normally, and then altered my orders for 1171 to NOT attack on land, but still the game crashed.

Is there any way out of this, or is this campaign ruined?

The system is a Dell 4300, P4, 1.6GHz, 256MB SDRAM, 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 4X, running Windows XP Home, SB Live 1024 Digital Sound Card.

pre patch i faced this problem when i had 18 armies in one province. do you have something like that? what solved the game for me was to install the patch and continue playing the same campaign. hope this helps

Welcome to the Org Hermann the Lombard

I'd download and install the patch. That should take care of your problem (famous last words?)

Thank you for the welcome, Gregoshi.

I was under the impression that a pre-patch game wouldn't run successfully post-patch. [Of course since it isn't running NOW past 1171, I don't have a lot to lose]

I also received the suggestion to clear all of my build queues, then save and reload and try to end the year. Worth a shot...then I'll try the patch.

I have the same problem, both pre-patch, post-patch and post-patch with a ton of mods. It happens after I play for a couple of hours (hey, it's semester break&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. I just go to end turn and it closes right out to the desktop. I've tried a lot of odds and ends to look for the cause, but I've just grown to live with it.

f1 have you searched the Apothecary? There might be some things to check/try there.

Gregoshi & f1: I was offered a solution on ezboard that worked when I tried it. Looking back there, this was apparently discovered by someone with a username of svnguyen to whom I am now greatly indebted. Here is his or her original message:

Quote[/b] ]When I first got the crash to desktop problem after hitting End Turn, I contacted Activision Support and they made me go through all these video/sound drivers setting but nothing help. I though them I have all my drivers updated and I even disable my sound card to help debug but nothing help. Then I tried this and it fixed the crash.

This problem only appears after playing the campaign for about 50 or more rounds. Usually crops up when I control about 1/2 of the map. It never crops up during the early stages of a campaign. I've already posted this and sent CA my crashed saved game but I'm pretty sure they won't fix it.

However, think I found the problem. It sounds crazy but bare with me as I've tried this several times with my crash saved game and it seems to work.

First, never ever save your game before pressing end turn. Also ONLY save the game immediately after ending your turn, but never after you make any moves/production/etc.

Second, to fix the crash to desktop after hitting end turn. Go to EVERY province you control and REMOVE all queued up units to be produced. And I stress EVERY province or it won't work. Next after you have removed ALL UNITS from being produced, you MUST SAVE your game. It will not work if you don't save your game first. Then hit End Turn. If it's still crashing to the desktop, go back to each of your provinces and make sure that no units are in the production queues. It's very easy to overlook one province. If you find just one province with units in production, remove the unit from the queue and SAVE the game, then hit End Turn. If you do this it should fix the crash.

From then on, never ever save your game after making any more epecially after putting units into production. Only save after you hit End Turn. Then do all you moves/production and hit End Turn without saving the whole time. Only save your game immediately after you end your turn.
