Now I´m certainly looking forward to a new game where you get to play the mighty Rome and especially the Greeks.
BUT
As history showed Total Wars way of strategy / fighting (advancing in lines, protecting flanks and so on) ended more or less after the American Civil war....
So the question is:
How many more games can our wonderful developers create?
Personally I would go BESERK http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif if I could get to play the Confederates in a Civilwar game that picked up the legacy of the Gettisburg game from ´95.
id like to think they could make a lot more...
here is some suggestions that have been said:
Fantasy
Rome
Ancient
Napoleonic
Civil War
WWI
now thats enough to last a few more years yet wouldnt you say? in that time they could come up with newer or different engines to cover other era's

And then there is Shogun 2 and Medieval 2...
I personally don't think that WW1 would work, since tactics changed abruptly during the Revolutionary War. Suddenly it got pretty hip to hide behind trees instead of walking shoulder to shoulder. So if they did decide to do WW1 they would need an engine to allow for those sort of things.
Biplanes... artillery... mustard gas shells... sigh.

Yeah, and it became fashionable again riding allong the battlefield in plates of iron, except the 'horses' suddenly weren't afraid of camels anymore (the idea!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.
I must say, even WWII is possible, though it will need a different way of thinking. Imagine, a battlefield of multiple km's wide. Forests, towns, hills. A platoon mk V panthers waiting behind a hill. a few machinegun squads crouching behind the crest, along with a few wehrmacht platoons. Suddenly, the forests ahead come alive, Russian platoons came trotting ahead, following the banks of a low creek. T34's come sweeping over a distant hill, meeting the foot platoons on their way to the German hill. The Panzers rise to the hillcrest. A nearby 88 battery opens up on the T34's. German mortar shells erupt in the midst of the Russian advance. The german machineguns and pathers open up, the T34's return fire while making evasive maneuvres, some of them allready alight with 88-shells through them.
The Russian platoons are decimated bij machinegun fire and retreat. Axis wins, this time..
Hmmm, on the other hand, it would be a very, very different kind of game. Think I'll stick to horse-cavalry.

Greets Mr. Hold Steady
Sorry but I still have to point out, that my thread mentioned the way the designers fighting system works now.
That is with the military doktrine up and till the Civil War.
What you seek seems to be a follow up to one of my other favorite games: Close Combat 5.
Indeed that would be great, but to be honest that won´t work into the way this game has been written...

Yes, it is folly. Lets please abandon it.
