Disband some military is the short term solution so that you start making money.
Then build economic improvements rather than military buildings and try establishing some trade routes with rich provinces.
The other way to make money is capture a rebel province that can earn some cash, then let it rebel and capture it again. They keep coming back just to refil your treasury every turn

yea.. I've tried taking over some enemy provinces, thus destroying my whole military =)

-that's the good thing about being italy... I keep on killing the pope- he keeps on coming back. it's a vicious cycle. =P

this is the first person who thinks the pope coming back is a good idea, usually he comes back with 2 or 3 stacks of elite foot knights and feudal knights while I'm still in early and using militia sergeants and spearmen http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Exactly. This bloodsucker has the best troops available (almost) and 2-3 stacks of them. I cannot se how this is a good thing: to defeat him you need an impressive army, and the upkeep and construction cost easily out weight the profit you can make by imprisoning him.

People don't factor in the cost of defeating him and rebuilding your force afterwards http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Destroy any buildings that you dont need - like those redundant archer workshops when you have a better prov to produce superior units.

Raid enemy provs and destoy their buildings, then withdraw.

Ransom prisoners, dont kill them for now.

As soon as you can - build your trade routes, especially as Italy. Then you wont have this happen again.

Do some basic upgrades: farmland improvement, build mines;if you have gold, silver, etc., build a merchant post, set up trade routes if you have tradeable goods.
By trade routes I'm referring to builing docks + shipwright, which will enable you to build ships.
Also, temporarily disband any military units you deem unnecessary at the moment. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Try to expand in quick bursts, so that you don't have to enlist much men in the meantime. Currently, I'm conquering the GH-occupied steppes with russians in a late expert campaign. Trying to dit it in 3 turns or so, with the use of a lot of mercs. Tehn I'll settle down and build me a summer estate on the Crimea (just hate Moscow in the winter).

I was deeply striped in cash as a Polish with just 500 on hand, but by capturing Danish King, I go 10,000 for ransom. It was expert mode, and I was disappointed as I wanted serious challege http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/redface.gif

lol, I got that too, campaigning as the English He just can't keep out of trouble that one. Left the Danes impoverished until I had the good merit to liberate them from his rule.

I was playing as Spain (All of my posts seem to start of this way, should I play another faction do you think? ) and have to say that letting a province revolt is a superb way of getting some cash in. Every time I was a bit short i would pull almost all troops out of Portugal, crank the taxes up and let them rip. It was Brilliant. I got some lovely Virtes for being a great defender and my units of Jinettes were all 5 or 6 valour without the generals help. I also got enough money to keep me going for a good few years as well. After that, the whole process just started all over again... I reckon Imust have killed about 100000 people during those happy times, god knows how many more were ransomed back...
