View Full Version : Newbie needing help with Battle Tutorial

I purchased Medieval: Total War yesterday and eagerly installed the game after work. I went through the campaign tutorial with no trouble. However, on the very first Battle Tutorial (Sicily), the instructions ask that you left click at the base of the flag in order to move your troops. Everytime I click ANYWHERE on the screen, the voice-over says (in a number of insulting ways) that I am doing it wrong. I'm 30 years old, an avid gamer, and by no means a moron. I can handle mundane movement instructions and have followed all the instructions to that point. I went ahead and tried one of the quick battles (which I lost horribly) and the troops moved fine there.

I have installed the patch, uninstalled the game, tried again without the patch, then reinstalled the patch. The result is the same regardless.

It wouldn't be a big deal, but the other tutorial scenarios aren't available until this one is completed, and not being overwhelmingly familiar with medieval battlefield tactics, I'd like to work through the tutorials before investing time in building a campaign.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just skip the tutorial (I never use it, for same reason you mentioned).

Just play a few battles and you will get the hang of it. Use the quick battle option.

[EDIT: post on here if you have questions about how to do certain things]

Humm well I didnt do the tutorials, force of habit of jumping in and sinking or swimming, but it may just mean click on one of the units. With the base of the flag being above where your units are lined up across the bottom. But I'll leave this to others who did try them.

hmm..it has been a while since I played the tutorial. Maybe you can download the demo - that's how I played the tutorial. Maybe you won't have the same problem with the demo.

Perhaps it was that you were double cliking instead of single clicking. I know that sounds weird but it makes a difference. I remeber being told off by the tutorial for double clicking instead of single clicking (and vice versa)so this could be the case. This is because it wants you to move your units slowly first (single cick)then moves on to running (double click)

If that isn't the reason then do like the rest say and ignore the tutorial/

hope that helps

well m8 i can understand perfectly your disapointment because the same happen to me with Shogun Total War. And i figured the problem when i bought a new PC and with a GForce installed rather than an on board grafic. The big problem is the grafics 'cause when you point with your mouse to do what your told to do it seems that you can get the right place. And afterwards the tutorial starts to call you names. Frustating. I skiped the tutorial. it isn't a big help to play the campaign.instead read the threads on thr forum org and try to play online. Y'll learn a lot more in this community.
hope this help, if not my apologies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks to everyone for the quick responses. Perhaps I'm just being overzealous. I'm sure it won't take me long to catch on. In response to a couple of suggestions, I I have tried single clicking and double clicking, to no avail. Also, I run a 1.2GHZ machine with 512 DDR and a GeForce4 4200 Ti, so it's not the system specs. I suppose I'll just skip the tutorial and, as was put earlier, sink or swim. I look forward to becoming part of the TW community.

Thanks again for the replies.

Heh oh sure quote me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif As to my first campaign, I chose the Almohads, couldnt even figure out how to pick up the army icons on the strat map for the longest, and got spanked my first try at the battle. But did get them all the way to 60% victory marker before my empire collapsed on me. Then I came here and read up on some things, and almost beat my second campaign as the Byzantines. Didnt finish it due to running out of cash near the end, though I had it won actually. Got over confident with my 400k florins in the bank and started a building frenzy and it disappeared in 10 years. Only had Italians, down to corsica and the other island, HRE, Polish, Hungarians down to about 3 provinces each, and the pope with his two provinces. May actually finish this one, after I sell off some buildings, when I fix my puter.

I hope this dosen't seem like a stupid question, but did you actually left-click once near the base of the flag? I got the game about 2 months ago, and tried the Tutorial, I had no problems with it. Also, you may have a mouse problem? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

From what I remember of the tutorial you have to be very precise where you are clicking. If it asks you to click on the base of the unit flags then thats exactly what you have to do. Just check to make sure you got the correct unit the tutorial is asking for.

Very tedius dont reccomend it, you ll probably learn more by jumping right in.

This bugged me too. I did get it, but I really had to zoom in close and click exactly on the base of the left flag, then drag and release exactly at the base of the right flag. Zooming in might help. If not, just skip it.

I'll warn ya though...I just begain a campaign and it's a little daunting. Have fun...

Yeah. Skip that crappy tutorial, begin an easy campaing with big guns(HRE, Byz, Egypt), do some fights, learn that way, give up that too easy campaing once you feel comfortable & let's rock with a true Campaign - France on Normal, English on difficult, such kind of plays.

***edit*** Btw, the patrician II tutorial(on the demo) is made like every tutorial should be made : you are free not to follow orders. It sure works better when you follow them, but you're free to do other things between actions, to read the following vefore acting, and so on. I HATE rigid tutorials, where nothing happens if you don't exactly follow the forecasted path(Gangsters 2; Capitalism 2)

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif A dual greetings and welcome to nemaj and (Also Spracht) Zarathustra.

If you are having trouble with the tutorials, then skip'em. No need to have them ruin your enjoyment of the game. If you have any questions about the game, ask them. There is also a wealth of information in the Table of Contents thread pinned to the top of the Main Hall forum.
