If I conquer England, how do I move on to Ireland? I've built ports at Wessex and Wales and in Scotland, put ships in those spaces between England and Ireland - but I still can't cross.
How is it done?

This is odd. Did you wait a turn after moving the ships? You can't cross until the next turn.
go to the part above Ireland with one of your ships...then you should be able to cross...

I've noticed that sometimes. In the past I've just waited a turn or to and it works ok. Irritating thing is when you you army bloody gets stuck there
Are there any enemy ships inbetween?

Hi Mars_Rising. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif You may have problems getting to Ireland, but at least you have made it to the Org. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif Don't be afraid to come back and visit us now that you've been shown the way to the Emerald Island.

Also do not forget that your army has to be in a province with a port and a line of ships to ireland to get there. Might I suggest if you have mercs to usde them so that you can disband them once you take Erie or you will have an army sittign there till you build a port to get off it.
to invade Ireland i would:
-Build a port http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
-Train religious agents, spies, emissaries and send em to Eire (if possible) to pacify the populus. Emissaries can serve to bribe Eire amries, prior to attack if wanted.
-Train enough ships to encircle the island and chain link all areas between my boarding port and Eire.
-Train an army which could be left in Eire for 4 years or disbanded without risk of revolution
-Move the invasion force to the port province & launch the attack
