Any way to remove excommunication?

Is there any way to remove the stain of excommunication?
Can I send an emmisary to the Pope and plead for forgiveness? Does building churches help?

If my king has been excommunicated, and he dies, are the heirs also excommunicated?

I'm tired of all the crusades against me. I want to return to mother church.

The two ways I know to be re-communicated(?) is to have your king die, or eliminate the Pope. Do note, however, that the Pope always returns after several years. If you are a Christian faction, ex-communication is pretty much a fact of life.

if playing the italians you could try the following;

invade the papal states and rome

Better make sure that if you do, you have a large enough army to keep garrisoned in both provinces (normally I have about 1000 men in each, and not just peasants but italian infantry, archers and decent cavalry) as when the provinces revolt they have some good units (normally feudal foot knights, chivalric sargeants and feudal knights)

The advantage is thought that you take over the papacy and in effect become the pope. I have noticed though that other factions will then attack you even more and it is very difficult to get alliances apart from with orthodox and islamic factions. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I thought you would autmatically be in the church again after about 10 years or so...I am pretty sure that I have been (or my same King) has been excommunicated more than on one occasion. When the current Pope dies all excommunications are forgotten. Also I think that when your King Dies you are also re-instated.

right click on the pope in the strat map to see how old he is. If he dies or your king dies the excommunication is done. If he and your King are less than 60, then consider invasion or assasination. Personally, I usually just live with it until Pope/King dies.

I always thought it was a delicious irony that the best way to be readmitted to Catholic communion is to make war on the Church. The devs obviously have a good sense of humour.

One thing I did to thwart the Pope is that when he reappeared in Rome with a large army of knights, I razed Rome to the ground. I got florin and even though the Pope got Rome, it would be years until he could start adding decent units to his army - assuming he survives that long. The Pope (in my experience) has an impressive army but he is a terrible general and a coward. What a waste of fine men.
