Rave:
I like how you can use more than just brute force if you'd like in this game.

I started an Early English Campagn. I wanted Scotland to make Highlanders, but I didn't want huge losses. I noticed that Wales had 3 longbow units so I bribed them.

My king's army with the longbowmen decimated Their army. My longbows wiped out their archers and cut the Highlanders to half. Once my urban militia charged, their army fled. I only lost 15 men. Thank you bribery. (assassins, priests, etc. are also very nice).

Rant:
However, to lure their army to my longbows perched on a hill, I used a unit of Royal Knights to tempt them. They made no kills, and lost 6 men to arrows. After the battle I noticed they lost 2 valor.

ARRRG They lost 2 valor sacrificing themselves for the GREAT benefit of my army

It appears the valor is gained and lost by kills and deaths only... Too bad...

But such an action by those knights was beneath them. It is an unmanly thing for them to do...the shame. They are not the tasty morsel to tease the enemy. NO They are the axe that cuts off the enemy's head

Haha, I suppose so.

But now that I'm thinking of it, is kills and deaths the only way it changes?

Within the game mechanics, what else should cause a change in valour?

Plenty of things could. The game keeps track of more than deaths and kills, how else could generals gain virtues like good runner? amount of routing/manner of fighting counts too, and is recorded at least temporarily for a unit.

That type of stuff IS recorded. I believe Good Runner is a -2 valour trait.

Fleeing, retreating, factoring in the success or losses of the entire army... look at the big picture a little too.

Bah, I'm tired... Sleep and me haven't met much lately. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Perhaps other ideas will come later.

Well, if you charge the enemy with your general with the odds being against you, you have a chance of getting fearless, or something of the sort, I believe.

Mr. Juice best be carefull if while your attemting to lure the enemy off a perch and you turn your back to the enemy too many times your unit will rout. Now if that unit is one of royal knights your entire army will begin to waver especially in the early era. This happened to me my entire army (700men) turned tail and ran from an army of like 200. OH THE SHAME
