Hi, I would have posted this where its supposed to go, but this damn forum wont let me. Great idea.
Anyway, can any1 play online using the ORIGINAL version of shogun, i.e. without the mongol invasion expansion installed.
I have re registered about 5 times, and Ill i get is either log on error, or just logging on...... but nothing happens.
Ive come back to the game after maybe a years break, and what do i find? Its broke.
So, is any1 able to log on?

Welcome back to the game rbeat100 and welcome to the Org.
I've not played STW in a long time, 6-9 months I'd guess. I do recall that over the summer there were major problems with the EA servers for STW/WE. They've been corrected but I don't know about any changes to the registration/login process. I also don't know the mix of STW vs WE players that remain out there. A couple of questions do come to mind though:
1) have you installed the latest STW patch?
2) have you searched the Sword Dojo forum for threads on login or server problems?
If you don't get a satisfactory resolution in a day or so, I'll copy your question over into the Sword Dojo forum.
i found resetting and running nothing at all before the game works

I never could because when i tried to register you have to put a clan name in and all the clan names were taken so i just cried http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif and waited with even more baited breath for medieval, were i was actually able to join multiplayer http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I have the lastest patch, 1.12. Ive tried registering with different names... retrying over and over again. But nothing.
I contacted EA, and here is what they had to say.
The server is still supported. I have contacted the people who run the server in the States and they have said that it is working without fault at the moment. Please could you try closing background programs, specifcally Firewall software. To close background programs in Windows 2000 or XP, follow these simple instructions:
Press the CTRL and ALT keys on your keyboard. They can be found to the left of your spacebar. Whilst still holding these keys down, press the Delete key. The Windows Security window will appear.
Click Task Manager. The Windows Task Manager window will appear.
There are three tabs on this screen - Applications, Processes and Performance. In the Applications screen, click on each of the entries, and click on End Task. Once you have closed all entries and the list is empty, click on the Processes tab.
In the Processes screen, click on any entries that are not listed below and click on End Process. Note: Do not click on End Process for any of the processes listed below.
System Idle Process
System
winlogon.exe
services.exe
svchost.exe
spoolsv.exe
csrss.exe
hidserv.exe
MSTask.exe
WinMgmt.exe
taskmgr.exe
IEXPLORE.EXE
Explorer.EXE
Once you have closed all your Applications and Process as described above, your system is free of any background programs that may be causing problems with your game.

Tried that, still dont work.
If you ask me , the mongol server is working, though it might be difficult to connect to it. But the server for the original total war game has been shutdown. This is a disgrace to me, its like they are trying to get more money out of you, u have to buy either the expansion, or the new game to play online.
Can they not patch it so we can play in gamespy? Is that so hard?

STW/Mongol is operated by EA
MTW is a commerical operation run by Activision.
They are competitors not the same company.
The linking point is that MTW/STW are designed by CA.
So what we have here is two car dealerships. One the second-hand dealer handling STW and the newer dealership down the road selling the latest MTW. Don't expect the STW dealership that can sell other newer models do anything to help its competitor that is now selling MTW.

Well, it was a very small minded idea in the first place to make every1 go through one server to play the gameonline. You can combat piracy in other ways that are just as effective.
Did no1 think what would happen 2, 3 years down the line when people had moved on? Who was going to support the server?
At the moment it looks like no one.
I guess it wont be long before the Mongol invasion server falls flat on its arse, and that will be end of it, as there is no where else to go.
I can think of another game where this happened, The myth games released by bungie. You had to log onto a central server just like you do with STW. The server lasted alot longer though... the myth tfl server must have been going for like 5 years. Its gone now, but i think they must have released the code, as u can patch the game and connect to a new server that is run by fans. So, the game is still alive. STW was released.... 2 and a half years ago? Maybe? Dead already. The release of newer versions should not kill off the originals.
But CA havent even released the source code to allow mods, so i cant see this happening with shogun.....

Well rbeat100, you aren't the only one having problems: grrr, why can't I log on? (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=4897)
Here is another suggestion I found from mist:

I have that same problem when I first try to log in (just says logging in and never changes) ... so what I do is .... click login ... then after 5 sec .. I cancel it....then click login again .... it always works for me on the second time.
It seems that things are just a little flaky for some people. BTW, it looks like most are on the WE/MI server. I couldn't get a read on how many actually play straight STW. But Sunday seems to be STW day.

Ive looked at all the post in the STW section.
Believe me, waiting 5 seconds, or waiting 10 mins will not work. The server has gone. The people who are playing have the mongol invasion expansion or the WE. I remember when the STW was running, sometimes it would say log on error, and u had to try a few times.

Might just buy the expansion pack, from reading some of the posts in here, it seems many people prefer STW MI/WE to medieval....

rbeat, buying WE is probably a wise decision. It can be had at a decent price now-a-days.
As for STW/MTW preferences, it is very much an individual thing. STW did have a charm all its own.
