My King died and i imediately had a civil war led by one of my most loyal general. He did have many command stars and a large army. So I guess He thought all of those years of service were worthless.
Is there anything I could have done to prevent a civil war in my country that occurred upon the death of my King?
Secondly, I noticed that a large portion of my provinces not only rebelled but actually turned into another faction. Is this normal, and again how could it have been avoided?http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif

Actually I think I just realized why it happened. I was so absorbed in the ruling of my Empire that my impotent http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif King never had any Male Heir's. I mean whats the deal with that. He had several Daughters and no sons. I can't remember seeing and little silver crowns on my troops. so I guess he just got unlucky...
I know I didn't have any Male Heir's so I guess 2 of the top general fought for control and my Neighbors, who of course my daughters married did a good old fashioned land grab on me. What sucks worse is all the troops in those territories went over without a fight.
Well I guess thats a good lesson learned and will only help to make this campaign more challenging.

You need spies spies and more spies in your own territories. And kill any gimp heirs you might have in line by way of ninja.

Dump, he had no gimp heirs to kill. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Regen#4, I think I'd relish having a civil war just for the new challenge of it. If I'd ever get back to actually playing a SP campaign, I could see myself looking for ways to force one.

I have always found an emissary in each province improves a General's loyalty, as long as there is an unbroken connection to the king (ships or provinces). If the influence of the king is high enough you can actually see the loyalty rating on a general's stats improve after dropping an emissary into the province.

Hmmm, did not notice that Housecarl, but surely will look next time.
And as Gregoshi said, civil war is fun. I am playing Poland now, and on top of my 1-loyalty units and Generals, King with only 2 piety, and ALL OTHER SPECS AT ZERO I had civil war, and my key province, Poland, is under constant pressure from HRE. Yet I like this SP campaign more than any other up to date. Can it be that because I am from Poland?

I got carried away.
I think that whet we are trying to say is that you will grow to see CWar as another challenge. As far as stopping it, you need a strong king, with male children ready to take over the crown, loyal generals with loyal units. Yet if you die with no heir, the war is imminent. Spies also help at keeping your people at line, I think.

You said that your provinces actually turned into another faction ? this might be heir related did your king have any sons ? did you sanction any marriages of princess to another faction ? because if your King dies without leaving a suitable male heir his lands go to the faction that your princess married .

Righto. It does happen once in a while that a King has no heirs. I hope you sided with the stronger general http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
think of all the fun you'll have rebuildign your empire http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
To minimize risk of being heirless (hehe) in the future, use emissaries to marry off your young heirs to foreign princesses. By the time a married heir reaches the throne, he may already have sons.
EDITED- also, use the cown button on the bottom left of the strategy map to keep tabs on your heirs..or lack of http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Might also help to have priest/bishop present.
Also, watch your tax rates.
Couldn't hurt to replace your governor if need be.
I'm having my own problems with civil war at the moment.

Thanks for all of the responses...
Basically I had never had a problem of not having a male heir, but I welcome the challenge of rebuilding my empire.
Also I got to feel first hand the warning of marrying your daughters may cause other factions to have a claim to your lands. All of My french provinces and about 1/3 of my german provinces sided with the spanish.
I knew I should have locked her away in a convent
Thanks again.
