Hello to all from a Newbie

Hopefully in RTW the playable factions are also the germanics and celts. It would be nice to crush teh romans just like Arminius or Brennus did.

I agree. Rome had it's setbacks, but it is still the greatest empire the world has ever known. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Agree also, but would it not be cool if you can unite the tribes and fight against this great empire.
For the game it would be fine if you can defeat this great army of the romans.

I think It would be a great idea to re-write history.
Heck if you can do it on MTW why not RTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

What about Hannibal. He campaigned through Italy for over ten years without a defeat and like SaFe said in his little qoute Varus and his soldiers, about 15000 troops I think, were slaughtered by Germanic tribesman.

Oh, oh - but i just read that the main goal of the game seems to be the caesar or imperator of rome. These does not speak for playing with the germanic or celtic, if you prefer gaul tribes.
But - who knows. If i remember school lessons correctly then there was once a germanic warleader named Ariovist of the tribe of the suebi who conquered half of gaul before meeting with julius caesar.
That seems a goal in gameplay - to unite the tribes and fight for provinces against rome - not to be the imperator.

Sorry for my english - schooltime is long over

shades wat wall? it was built in scotland by the romans to keep the other skirt wearers out (the scotts)

the romans conquered england so i think uve got sum wrong info.

considering there was 1 major vict against rome compared to so many victories by rome i think we can safely say that they were the best and in many cases still are.

hate to burst ur bubbles lads but rome didnt fall due to germans or greeks etc. it fell cos of a succesive line of bad ceasers who where mentally unstable, eventualy rome fell into civil war and collapsed, but romes legacy still lives on as many modern ways of thinking can be traced back to them.

The wall ShadesWolf was refering to is called Hadrians Wall named after the Roman emperor Hadrian (obviously). I think I remember reading that it was built to keep the Picts(?) out of Roman Britain.

yes and the picts where the original ppl in scotland and it is called antonine wall since i live about 400 feet away from it.

its not in england its in scotland.

id like to point out that the romans couldve just wiped out the celts completely and almost did the only thing that stopped them was that they didnt want their lands cos they were all cold and wet.

Edit
(sorry for the wrong wall name i was vry tired at the time)

its definatley antonine wall i whent to antonine school.

it was built in scotland to keep the picts from raiding roman camps.

I thought Rome also fell because of the corruption and the sheer size of its empire and it only had not enough troops to sufficiently guard its borders, and the borders were always skirmished and raided really bad by barbaric tribes

And didn't Rome get sacked by the Visigoths or something? Attila the Hun? Iunno, it's been a while since I've read any books on ancient Rome.

Oh yeah, I heard that Julius Caesar once beat a battle where he had like 5,000 men and the tribes had 25,000 which outnumbered him 5 to 1 (duh) does anyone have any like articles or something about that?

It was Alesia or something like that. I have the old Avalon Hill wargame of that. You need to add another zero to those numbers. As I recall, according to the historical info in the game, 50,000 Romans besieged 60,000 Gauls under Vercigetorix(?) in Alesia. A Gallic relief force of about 250,000 came lift the siege. Caesar's built two defensive lines - one facing inward towards the town and the other facing outwards towards the relief force. The outer ring fortifications were 11 miles (18 km) in length.

Forgive me if my numbers and spelling are off. I haven't played the game in nearly 20 years. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

That’s odd I used to live near Hadrian’s wall and I thought it was in England running from Bowness in Cumbria to Wallsend on the Tyne, but as you say you live near it now I must be wrong, or were you thinking of Antonnines Wall which is further north in Scotland? I was just curious.

Another of the key factors in Romes fall was, that the superb strategy they used for several hundred years didn´t develop.
Especially the cavalry units of other tribes was far superior to Romes..

Other fractions simply got better at different fighting techniques whereas the romans stagnated.

I also heard that there would be War dogs? What purpose would dogs have in a battle? Other than bite a soldier to death http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif .

Trajan
01-17-2003, 11:56
War dogs were used to disrupt formations. Should reduce the fighting ability of the formation (in game terms) until the hounds are killed.

Thanks Trajan.
Ah yes, I seem to remember the Romans using Dogs in the battle at the start of the film Gladiator. I still wonder how a pack of Dogs would disrupt a formation of armoured sword weilding soldiers though.
I might be going over the top here but did the dogs where any sort of armour?

Mastiffs were often used as war dogs and accompanied the Celts into battle, the ones used by the Britons were particularly prized, and during the Roman period in Britain they were exported in large numbers to Rome and were used to guard property, prisoners and in the arena. Hannibal when he passed over the Alps into Italy not only took elephants but also trained war mastiff like dogs. Large dogs are also depicted in Assyrian Bas-relief’s in the British Museum as being used in war in about 650bc.

Don't worry about not getting to play as either Gauls or Germans, go to the official RTW website @www.totalwar.com/rome.htm and read this part

Players can command entire Roman Legions, Greek phalanxes, barbarian hordes and the armies of Carthage, Egypt, and the Successor Kingdoms, each with a mix of exclusive units

SaFe
01-18-2003, 11:59
True, but it seems that you can play this barbarian hordes only under roman leadership. Because they said that the ultimative goal is to become imperator of rome. I think the leader of the tribes wouldn't build a colloseum or such buildings the talkes about on their official site. The starting differences between, say the germanic tribes and rome are very different. They have other goals. Example: The cimbri and teutoni tribes that defeated the armies of rome several years before Marius defeated them never built towers or similar buildings.
But perhaps the surprise me.
Again - excuse my english...

i just read this sentence on totalwar.com about the performance of Rome: virtually no sacrifice of performance compared to Medieval: Total War....
IF this is true, Rome:Total War will be simply ASS-KICKING and as a poor pupil i wouldn't even have to upgrade my pc.
